Hi Valkokir when it comes to creating MLP files from different sources I use POIConvert its a free POI converter and it handles everything I throw at it. OV2 files, CSV files etc you name it and it keeps everything.
There is not much of an interface but it works quite well

You cant actually edit the POI's themselves in this package (its just a converter) to make any amendments to the GPS files afterwards I use EasyGPS which is free and is very flexible in what you can do with the POI's (as well as viewing online)
Hope this helps

Thanks for the reply. I was using that program last night actually and had some success with it. Unfortunately I wasn't able to populate as much information into the Mapopolis MLP file as dcrochet could using his method, but it still worked quite well. I'd definetely agree that it is easier to use too. I downloaded a GPX file then converted to XLS, worked with the data as necessary and then converted back to GPX then manually used GPXtoMaplet instead of going straight to Maplet in POIConvert. I did this because there is a bug in POIConvert where the GPX options that are selected in the program aren't used on the intermediate GPX file and therefore truncates the names and data to ALL CAPS and 8 characters or less.
I had limited success with EasyGPS, I think because the data set I was working with was so large (817 points) but I am going to go through the documentation and see what I can do differently.
Thanks again.

Hi Valkokir I have GPX files with over 5000 POI's in my EasyGPS and it works fine.
Also I have not had any problems with data being truncated but I will try some experiments.

Okay, I was succesful in using POI convert to manipulate some data. I wanted to map out all of the Harley dealers in the US. Fortunately I was able to find someone who already did the data collection, http://www.drewcommins.com/hddealers/
All I needed to do was put it in an XLS so I could alter the data easily. So I used POIConverter. The following file is in xls format.
www.msu.edu/~valkokir/harley/hddealer.xls
"Points" sheet is the data which POIconverter will pull out for the GPX file. Note that the Sheet name must be "Points" for POIConvert to read it.
"Maplet Format" sheet explains the way the data must be formatted for POIConvert to recognize it. The two photos show the GPXtoMaplet Parameter. The first option borrows the <sym> column to use for line 3 of the description and uses a set category for all points. The second option leaves Line 3 blank and sets the Category to whatever is in the <sym> column. I ended up using a combination of the two leaving line 3 blank and a set Category. Note that if you choose to pull in the info out of the <sym> category, any blank entries will default to "Waypoint" whereas the other two description columns will just remain blank.
"DMS Convert" sheet is just a quick formula which convert Mapopolis' latitude and longitude format to a decimal as required by a GPX file.
So now all you have to do is run POIconvert (make sure you set the GPX options or all the dealer names will become all caps and truncated)to convert to GPX and then run GPX to Maplet using the appropriate parameters.
Note that the data is from the website listed so all credit goes to him. As he notes, some data may be incorrect. If you look at the file, all the ones where I have typed in a telephone number and address are local dealers or ones I visit often. Of these 20 data points, only one was off, the one right up the street from me. it was about 3/4 of a mile up the road from where it actually is so I edited the data. The rest checked out perfect (I compared their location to a manual address search I did in Mapopolis of those 20 points.

Works just like I want now, thanks for encouraging me to look at that program more deeply. I emailed the author and told him about the Maplet naming bug I described in a previous post and he emailed me back and said it definetely sounded like he had something coded wrong and would look into it. so I'll post back here if I hear any more one way or the other.

What format? the xls file i have hosted above is the raw data and will let you convert into any format using the procedure here. If you can't get it to work let me know.
Edit: wait you said North America... Nobody has compiled the data for the rest of the globe. I know there are programs out there that can pull the data off of websites based on zip code searches. Harley's website is not too condusive to finding mass quantities of points. I had planned on doing this eventually but no plans in the near future as I rarely leave the US and would probably just add them as I go if for example I was going to Mexico.
On that note if you have a specific area you wanted added to the file I might be able to tackle that quickly and add it to what is already there.

| I'm using the latest GPSbabel 0.2.4 and there is no Custom “Everything” Style selection for the input file. Anyone know what setting to use in this new version? |
