I'd also be interested in knowing how good the service is in the States and Europe, maybe someone can tell us

Hi Dewi,

Thanks for your posting. Your screen shoot looks different from min (Nuvi 680). I’m would like to know what is you model / ver. / build date. Currently I’m receiving Weather and Movies. However, I still cannot get traffic. I called MSN and they said that they have service Toronto. I called Garmin and they said contact MSN. My question is, if you receive traffic in Toronto or not before I call Garmin again.

That screen shot is from a 760 using the most recent firmware update that was released just this week (v2.40). Before the update it looked like the one you posted. Now it has changed to the one I posted, plus there's a second screen that shows the specifics about weather, movie time, traffic and gas price data packets received. I ordinarily use the GTM20 cable for traffic, so I'm not sure whether the GDB50 could receive any traffic info or not. In the brief time I've tried it I have only received Toronto weather, movie times and US gas prices. While the status screen shows I receive 100% of traffic, I've never seen Toronto traffic data either (I've only tried it on the weekends).

I would suggest contacting MSN to let them know. I may do the same when I have more time to test my GDB50 cable next week, if it's not receiving anything.

P.S. I sent an email to the email support page...if any one else is having troubles in Toronto, please do the same so they know there's a problem.

In Europe German the traffic report is excellent. Been in Germany a couple of times and every time the traffic report was spot on. If there is an accident the GPS will route you way before. Onnce there was some sort of slow down in which the GPS told us to get off the autoban and take some side streets which by passed the problem. It was right which there was a problem.

On note is that German was the first country to have traffic report installed about 10 years ago. So we have lots of catch up in Canada. Europe will always be advanced in technology. With some time we will get there.

On my Nuvi 350, since I installed the GTM12 receiver I have noticed little icons (non-clickable) on the route as I drive i.e. gas station icon and food icon....is this a function of the traffic receiver or just a new thing from Garmin throuugh one of their updates? I have to try driving without the receiver plugged in to see if I get those icons. Just curious....

No - that's a normal function of the GPS unit - when you're zoomed in close enough on the map, POI details are also displayed. Zoom out a level and they disappear.

Ahhhh that would explain it because I knew I had messed with the "zoom". Thanks Mister E

Just bought a Navigon 7100 yesterday. Did not manage to get any traffic info at all. I do not have an external antenna; it was not in the box (and not listed as part of the package; the manual as well is calling it "optional").

1. Would I need an external antenna?

I drove in GTA, usually as far North as Richmond Hill and East-West between Mississauga and Pickering. I also understood from this thread that (at least the Garmins have) the antenna located inside the cigarette lighter adaptor.

2. Is it the same (traffic antenna in the cig lighter) for Navigon (7100)?

What I noticed is that with the Tunning Mode set to Automatic, the unit contnuously searches through frequencies, from approx 80 to 108 MHz. I also tried to set the freq myself using Hold Frequency and tunning to few frequencies mentioned on this thread (such as 100.7 MHz). Still no signal. Well, I did this in the home with the unit run on batt and on AC wall power. If the antenna really is in the cig lighter, I can see why there was no signal.

The TTN site says they operate anly Mon-Fri, 5am-7pm.

3. Is it possible they don't work these days?

Not releated to TMC, but I would like to know, what other experiences are regarding the display of speed limit. I drove on streets yesterday (including HWY7)but also on 404 and could not see any speed limit displayed. They say speed limit may not be available for all roads, but not on 404?

Thank you.

I just got a Navigon 7100 as well. I also have a C530 and I was considering getting the upgrade cable to get traffic. The bigger screen, "reality view", and lifetime traffic were all reasons to just upgrade the unit.

So far, I'm very disappointed. I've noticed all the same issues as you but also, the touch screen is very hard to use with tiny icons. You have to press very hard for it to respond and because of the long attach arm, the GPS tends to bounce up and down with every bump and also when you press the screen. I had both units running at the same time for the last few days and the C530 is light years ahead in terms of ease of use, responsiveness and getting the job done without hassle. The 7100 by comparison takes several extra touches just to input a location and get going. What makes this more painful is that usually you have to press several times to get it to recognize a touch. The smaller icons on a bouncing screen combined wth poor touchscreen sensitivity is definately not attractive.

With all that said, anyone know how to get the 7100's traffic to work? If the traffic comes online and there's some kind of firmware upgrade to make the unit more usable, I might keep it but if I can't get this resolved, I'll just get a nicer Garmin or upgrade the c530 with the new cable.

I have Navigon 5100. You need to have external fm receiver to receive better FM receiption. There is no upgrade available for 5100 as of today. I bought this unit only for traffic. and its work very good with external FM receiver.

Went to Montreal for the holidays and had the Nuvi 660 with me. Well, I had no luck at all getting traffic reports. The whole time it was amber. I was in downtown Montreal went to Brossard then to Laval as well in Point-Claire. Nothing at all.

Started to get something on and off when just entering Oshawa. Once in Oshawa the TTC was green and working.

Wouldn't it be cool to have this service between Toronto and Montreal.

Hope, my info helps.

Cheers,

I've been silently watching this thread, and finally decided that it was worth investing in a GTM 12 for my Nuvi 350. akalpin, many thanks for your informative notes: your proximity to where I live (Unionville, Ontario) plus the fact that your gps is a nuvi 350 gave me the confidence to get a gtm 12. I am VERY happy with the results, notwithstanding the limitations, especially weekend coverage.

Now, I want to replace my wife's Quest with a nuvi 750: can anyone tell me if the corresponding traffic receiver is a GTM 20? from what I can make out, the GTM 12 is not compatible with the 750. many thanks in advance...

If you can wait, Garmin just announced nüvi 850 and 880. The paint hasn't even dried on my 760 box and they are popping Nuvi's out of the oven like crazy. The 750 comes with the GTM and antennae built-into the power adapter.
