I downloaded the WM2003 version, and have it splitting a Bluetooth GPS signal coming over COM7 to three different programs accessing the GPS data on COM0, COM6, and COM9. So it seems to work with no problems so far.

Good work and thanks!

Might you also develop a version for the WM5 smartphone platform?

One thing I'm noticing with my Win Mobile 2003SE Pocket PC and a Bluetooth GPS is that it is sensitive to whether the Bluetooth link to the GPS is already active. There is no problem if I choose "Start Splitter" (with the input and output ports set, of course) with my Bluetooth GPS link already active to the requested input port. Likewise, if the GPS Bluetooth link is active when I open Port Splitter and choose "Stop Splitter", it releases the connection and the "Start Splitter" option reappears.

However, there are several situations in which having no active Bluetooth link to the desired input port causes an error message "Error reading data from the input port" to appear, with the following results.

A) If no Bluetooth GPS link to the desired input port is active when "Start Splitter" button is pressed, the above error message appears and then even though the button turns to "Stop Splitter", the desired virtual output port(s) are not created.
B) If the Bluetooth GPS was active when "Start Splitter" was chosen, and the desired output ports were created, then at any point that the Bluetooth GPS link is broken (turning the GPS off or simply getting out of range), the above error message appears and the virtual output ports won't work when the GPS Bluetooth link is reestablished. In fact, the "Stop Splitter" button doesn't work until the Bluetooth GPS link is again active. However, once it is, pressing "Stop Splitter" (twice, usually) will work, after which ""Start Splitter" will get everything working again.

These are minor inconveniences for developers and the tech-savy, but if you can modify Port Splitter to be initialized without a GPS Bluetooth link already active, and then automatically start operating when a Bluetooth GPS connection over the chosen input port is present (over and over again, if it is turned off and then back on, or the Pocket PC is simply carried out of range and then back), it would make Port Splitter a good match with other products needing to share a Bluetooth GPS and targeting non-tech consumers.

Thanks again for your work, and I hope this helps your beta-stage development.

It doesn't fit on the screen of my Qtek 2020 PDA phone. Never seen anything like this. Screen cuts off exactly on the R of SPLITTER, nearly on the T of exit. The dropdown arrow to select com port falls off at the right, clicking in the field has no result.
I hope you can easily fix this?
thanks and success

Ok, thanks you.

But note that you can write COM8 (for instance) on the field to choose the input port.

Thanks, that seems to work so far but it only gives me the "choice" of com0: as output port. Haven't tried any further, just wanted to report that typing in the input port does work
success

Hi, I downloaded the WM5 version for my HTC Wizard (Cingular 8125). It installed fine. I saw your comment above that you can just type in the Com port for the BT GPS, so that was fine. HOWEVER, the output list box is completely empty, and the dropdown is completely empty, and it won't take keyboard input either. And, the ADD button does nothing. So, I am stuck, with one input and zero outputs. Any help?

Hi,

you don't see free ports because all are used by the operating system. To be sure of that, make a softreset of device.

The question is now: Can I free some of these ports than I dont plan to use? Yes, you can make it editing the registry using this tool of Franson

http://franson.com/gpsgate/download.asp?file=DeviceXPPC.zip&platform=ppc

For instance, a Compaq iPAQ 3850 does not have bluetooth so that I will free the ports 5 and 8 allocated by Windows Mobile 2003 and I will use as output in Port Splitter.

Please, read below before using this tool.

(I already sent this email privately to JAL, but I am posting the info on the forum, in case someone else has the same symptoms)

I downloaded the DeviceX from Franson, as you suggested. Here is what I see, when I run the tool:

COM0
COM1 Serial Port
COM2
COM3
COM4 Infrared Port
COM8 Serial on USB
COM9

So, as you can see, there are 3 ports not listed, COM5, COM6 and COM7. Of those, I know COM7 is the port used by the Bluetooth GPS, which was connected at that time. So, I am really not sure why that did not show up as used. Even taking that into account, we should have at least port# 5 and 6 available and listed in the Port Splitter, but it is not. This seems to be something different because I am using WM5 maybe? I see that you are using 2003.

Also, what is puzzling to me is that COM0, COM2, COM3 and COM9 are listed with no explanation as to what they are used for. I wonder why.

Hello Kal,

don't worry by the names, they are done by the manufacturer.

If you don't plan to use the infrared ports, then remove your ports 4 (IrDA) and 3 (IrCOMM).

I hope this helps you,
regards,
JAL

Well, I did not want to lose the ability to use the IR port. I was hoping that I could use the "unused" ports 5 and 6, but this does not seem possible with the port splitter. I am not sure why.

Sorry, If you cannot see a given port under the output list box, then you cannot use it. I'm 100% sure of that.

See my device

Has 3 ports (4,5,8) for the bluetooth communications.

For your device maybe...
com6: serial cable on BT
com5: BT serial port ingoing
com7: BT serial port outgoing

My real question is what function have your ports 0,2 and 9. Maybe are reserved for the GSM modem.

JAL

OK, I did some more investigation: In the bluetooth settings panel, COM ports tab, it shows:

BT-GPS-341468 (COM7)
Incoming Port (COM6)

So, it looks like at least COM6 and COM7 are both used up (Why does Franson not show that?). That *should* leave COM5 open, but who knows maybe it is silently used up by something else, and Franson can't detect it.

I have NO idea about 0,2 and 9. This is all so mysterious. I wonder if there is any way to find out.
