I've never seen that particular alarm message. It's not one of the several graphics files. I suspect these graphics didn't get copied properly or you may need to perform a hard-reset.
Before doing a hard-reset, save your address book using the 'transfer data - save' menu item. Power down the iWay 500c and while holding the speak/volume button, power it back on. On the diagnostic screen, select hard-reset and accept the warning.
This may erase your address book. If it does, use the 'transfer data - load' function on the menu to retrieve it. Let us know how you made out. |

Well, you've obviously got some sort of a software problem. I'd suggest trying to reinstall the files from the skinsupdate directory which contains the various warning screen graphics files. You can do this by following these steps:
1. In the iWay drive, create a folder named SkinsUpdate (make sure there's no other garbage on there from the last update attempt)
2. Place the warning graphics files from the update into a new foledr named Default inside the SkinsUpdate folder
3. Copy 2410_8.ldr to the iWay drive
4. Reboot the iWay with the USB disconnected and allow it to copy the files to the hidden partition.
See if that helps - otherwise, you're looking at sending the unit to Lowrance for disk-rebuilding through its IDE interface.
If you're wondering how to get these files, they're all contained in the update file from Lowrance - you just need to extract them, then pull them back off the iWay before rebooting it and save them on your computer's disk for later use. |

If only YOUR version of warning.gif fails to load, it may be that you didn't save it in the right format or size to be displayed. These are low-resolution graphics and you must make sure the bitmap is sized appropriately (less than 320 pixels wide and less than 230 high). It must be at least some minimum size too so the titlebar will fit on it with the X.
The one I made is identical to the top section (with the orange Warning) of the original warning.gif but I cut it off below that so the X is lower on the screen. |

I reinstalled the files from the skinsupdate directory. No success, still get the alarm window. I guess a call to Lowrance is in order. I will let you know what they suggest. |

| I just spoke with Lowrance, they said return it and they will replace the unit. No charge even though it is no longer under warranty. Great customer service, well worth the 10 minute wait on hold. Thanks everyone for the help. |

Got a question about the warning.gif.
Any ideas about puting your name, phone number, email address or drivers license info on the screen in case the item was stolen or lost?
I thought I read something about that before, but can't find it now.
Thanks. |

You certainly could do it that way by editing Warning.gif but it wouldn't be permanent. Any software upgrade would overwrite warning.gif and delete your information.
A more permanent way would be to create a customized subset of skin files which displays the owner's name and phone number (for example) on the top or bottom of one of the menus. Then use the boot-loader to copy that subset of skin files to the hidden partition. Since there's no way to delete these files (only overwrite them), the custom skin you created would always be present on the list of skins regardless of software updates. When you select that skin, it would always use that customized menu with your personal information on it.
Not exactly fool-proof, but a step in the right direction. Of course, you really have to know what you're doing, skin-programming-wise, to pull it off without screwing something up. Once you move the files to the hidden partition, there's no going back. |

Thanks Bob. I think I'll just use the warning.gif for now.
Any ideas about what 'personal' into should be in a skins file? |

| Ok I am as far from you guys as possible in knowledge about this stuff. I did upgrade to 1.7.0 by downloading it to my desktop and then installing it. What I'd like to know is how I turn off safety mode, it is a real pain! I'm afaid you will have to tell me like you are talking to a first grader if it involves changing the software because I have no idea what you are talking about most of the time. If any of you have the time and patience to walk me through how to turn it off permanently it would be much appreciated! |

Shelley, since you upgraded the software, everything went back to factory defaults again. You have to go through the menu pages until you find the Safety Mode button and turn off safety mode. There's no software changes, just setting the menu correctly. If you're that unfamiliar, you'll probably get a lot out of using every button in every menu once or twice to see what they all do. You can't break it - just investigate all the menus, find-buttons etc.
Come to think of it, there is one "gotcha" about 1.7.0 upgrades that's not mentioned on Lowrance's web site (oh, by the way it's 1.8.0 now). If you have ANY custom skins loaded onto your disk (other than the 3 factory skins: Default, Night Mode and Audio On Map) then they will have to be modified by deleting certain folders or you won't get all the menu or find items. But it sounds like you have none of those... Good - you don't need the hassles.
I won't give you "step by step" directions for something that's a basic user-operation type of thing. I'd be doing you a disservice by telling you the exact sequence of buttons to press to get to each menu item - that's what you have a brain for. Learn how the unit works and you'll be happier down the road. You don't need to know how to program it; just how to use it. |

I've got 1.0.8 and cannot get "Find Cities" to work using Cycle 1.9 skin. What folders do I have to delete/modify to get things working again. BTW Everything works with Mountainview. |

| Basically, you'll want to delete the FindMenu folder so it will revert back to using the default skin's find options (if that's acceptable). Otherwise you'll have to modify the code to match what the new default skin's FindMenu.skn, FindMenu1.skn, and FindMenu2.skn use. As revisions to the software come out, Lowrance fine-tunes the categories and the search methods in their skins to match the current software. Third-party skins often don't keep up with this so Lowrance made a "missing" folder revert back to the default skin's files. |

Bob, I apologize. It has been a long time since I set it up originally and I had forgotten that I had turned it off. I rarely change anything on that page. Should have looked for it. Have been car shopping and was told that all the new built-in will not be operable while driving so I just jumped to the conclusion that the new software had made the 500c that way. Believe it or not I do have a brain and manage to use the iWay in the way I need it. Obviously stupid questions aren't tolerated on this board! |
