Does anyone have recommendations for maps in places like Cairo Egypt, Bucharest Romania, and Bangalore India? Ideally, I can just buy the city not the whole country. Thanks! |

Anyone has an idea? Cheers !
The Mio P550 comes with a 2.5mm male to 3.5mm female pigtail; kind of a pain, but at least they included that. |

| Does anyone know of anyway of recovering the Serial Number of a Mio P550? On mine ,the serial number on the side has rubbed off from me holding the device there and is unreadable. I need it so i can get a repair under warranty. |

The Mio P550 Saga continues (this is a cross posting from another web site that has a similar thread and is for you guys info).
Post #1 Ok everyone here is the final answer (I believe from Mitac US Support). I have now locked up five (yes FIVE) units and its definitely a software install issue. I installed for my kids Mugen Storm which was developed for Win Mob 2003. 2 mins later the game locked up and then the machine did too and wouldnt get past the splash screen - no hard reboots or battery changes etc made any difference. So they dont know why software interrupts the firmware''s ability to reload but it does, and until they fix it I suggest you stay away from non Win Mobile 2005 software. Mitac US support tries its best but only recently got a working P550 after locking up the one they had LOL.
Post #2 DUH - I DID IT AGAIN !!!! !!!!!! I installed EzExpense on another MIO and it locked up at the Splash screen. The version of EZExpense was Version 2 build 222 and was I believe from the date of the software intended for Win Mobile 2003 as it was produced in 2003... GENERAL WARNING TO ALL MIO P550 USERS - DONT INSTALL NON WIN2005 MOBILE SOFTWARE OR THAT WRITTEN BY MICROSOFT.... NOTHING TO DO WITH A MEMORY CARD IN PLACE - YOU CANNOT RESET THIS DEVICE AT ALL IT IS DEAD. MIO USA HAVE ACKNOWLEDGED THIS IS AN ISSUE....
Post #3 Units 7 and 8 have also locked up now but with a low power issue. I let the power of both of them go below about 50% and made the mistake of turning them off (front button) or pressing the reset button (recessed on bottom edge). Neither of these two units would then get past the splash screen. MIO currently say they dont know of this issue on this firmware revision... R01 Anyone else had them lock up totally when the power went low ?
Post #4 Unit #9 now locked up after I had installed Sprite Backup and was recovering a couple of map files that I had accidentally deleted. I am stuck now as there are no more units within 200 Kilometres of me and I have a dead unit. Can anyone give me help in getting it to reset ? Whats the way of using the reset button and the up arrow ? and someone mentioned waiting for a noise ....

Are all the GPS reception problems with the P550 fixed. The GPS on my P550 and TomTom navigator 6 fixes within a few minutes but the reception definitely appears weaker than my stand-alone tomtom ONE.
Using the P550 in portrait (upright) mode is better. What I find is that it takes maybe 5-10 minutes to get full signal strength, ie acquire maximum number of satellites and then switching to landscape mode is then possible. Using landscape mode from a cold start means that the satellite fix is definitely intermittent initially.
Is this normal. Can anyone else with a P550 comment?
Also what software allows you to check the signal strength in dB to verify that it is adequate. I have heard of CE monitor, but can't find it.
Thanks |

FIXED P550 BIOS problems fixed now I think. I have had a new ROM version in for over a week now and I have installed 30 or 40 programs including the games and apps that locked up the device before and I just cant kill it. I am not getting any operational issues with it apart from when I have "autolock enabled". When this is (and you have to click the two screen buttons after power on I get issues with the front buttons not working after a power off). You have to manually turn the unit off and on to get them to work again. So, this is my NINTH unit thats working again back from MIO and if I were you, I would ask for the R13 ROM as that appears to fix things (This is with a 2GB US model, not the 128MB European versions - so I am not sure what is happening with the sleek Euro models).
As regards the accuracy or the aerial. I have a garmin street pilot (old but very accurate and very good) and when the two units are next to each other on my dash I see no real operating differences in terms of accuracy once locked on. The P550 works best in portrait mode because the aerial is at the top of the unit. It takes me longer to get a fix on the "birds in the sky" when in landscape but this is to be expected. If its an issue get an external aerial and you'll be sorted.

As my P550 battery seems to be losing a bit of life I thought I would buy a new one. The problem is (I haven't ordered it yet) that I can't get the battery cover off.
I have tried doing everything I can think of to manipulate whatever is under the the small rubber bung, but the cover will still not release itself.
Any ideas please? |

In answer to the questions about the bios versions that I am now running. Its exactly the same as before and you.It did not change after the fix. Just tell them you need the R12 version . Getting the battery cover off is usually very easy as all you have to do is to use a jewellers screwdriver and remove the screw there were no secret elips to release.

Hi everyone! I have a dilemma.....I would like to purchase a P550. I have thoroughly researched each of the forums and have gone through the various problems, issues, and methods of solving them, and I'm still convinced that I would like one. Anyway....my dilemma is...do I purchase the European model or the US model?
The US model has 2Gb onboard flash in comparison to only 128Mb for the European one. I get the feeling that the difference in voltage isn't going to be a problem (can someone confirm this?), as I can easily purchase an English power pack for the P550. I realise that there will be an issue with the manufacturers warranty if I purchase the US model, however I do have friends in the US who can send it back if needs be.
I would really appreciate any thoughts on this matter.
Thanks |

Firstly the power supply isn't an issue at all because it uses a usb interface for power and so any usb type charger should work (I charge via the supplied one, a blackberry, a car charger and the pc usb). But the real issue is to make sure you get the fixed bios version in any unit you buy otherwise it will go wrong in days or weeks. R13 is what you need and I have no idea how to find out whether a unit you buy is "fixed" or not. Does that make any sense ? Basically what's the point of an expensive 128mb unit (european) when you can get the 2gb cheaper us version if all else is equal. |

There is a new bug with the R13 rom that causes the screen to powersave after 10 seconds. This is common to other win mobile devices also and can be fixed with the program called "battery status" www.Chi-tai.info
