Vimes,
That was me. I can get the software running but cannot get it to listen to the GPS com port as there seems to be no setup screen for the GPS.
Re: 1.07 / Dest 5.5 I was watching an AVI movie on Sunday whilst marshalling for a sponsored cycle ride (don't ask!). During a car chase the TCPMP player dropped down to 0.8 FPS which is less than 1 picture a second. Same test using 5.1 gives me 12 FPS which is watchable. That was the straw that broke the camel's back for me,

Here is what I did for my 'movie' browsing....

Remove the player that gets installed with the Windows CE update and then install the very latest version....
http://picard.exceed.hu/tcpmp/test/
tcpmp.pocketpc.0.72RC1.cab
My video's are rencoded using Dr.DivX http://community.divx.com/labs/viewEntry.php?id=182&cid=2

...at 320x240 (so that it is at the screens resolution). If the sound is a little on the low side I use VDubmod to do ' a batch job' on them to increase the audio by around 50% or so greater.
Putting the files on the SD card once they have been encoded using the above method gives superb playback and zero pauses, well at 36fps :)

If I change the video driver to GDI (from GAPI) then my benchmark goes down to 17fps.

A pity that there isn't a config file or something for Route 66 to get it to communicate to the PB400.

Hi, I am now getting quite frustrated with this update, I can't get it to work AT ALL!

Here's what I do,

(1) I get the 2 extracted .nbo files onto the SD provided
(2) I copy "Destinatorapps" off the card, onto my PC
(3) I format the SD into FAT
(4) I copy the .nbo files onto the SD
(5) I press the down, reset (with a pen) and the power and let go when appropriate, but I get the PB screen, then PB loading, then the stupid callibration screen - I am using a GPS 400. Could someone please help me Ta

djb...... If you read the thread you will notice that I too had similar problems in trying to upgrade my unit. When a friend bought one I did the upgrade a little quicker by...

Press the Power off AND the reset button AND the arrow down button - that is THREE buttons that you need to press at once, together.
Then...

Release the reset button first then leave one second, or a little longer, before you release the other two AT THE SAME TIME.

I understand that all I have done is to repeat the above steps that you are doing but it seems to be very important that the sequence is followed exactly AND there is sufficient delay between releasing the reset button and then releasing the other two. When I did my friends unit I found my biggest problem was the lack of delay after releasing the reset button and before releasing the other two causing the upgrade to fail.

Good luck.

Hi Paul got it working and this is what I did.
You have to load the update plus the WINce wakeup files.
Then d/load the DG console and install on your pc.
From the console install the software to your gps.
You will then have 2 Destinator progs on your gps.
1 will be in the root of My Computer and the other will be in MyFlashDisk.
navigate to the DEST/prog in MyFlashDisk and remove the "destinator.ini" file.
Replace it with the "destinator.ini" file from the prog in My Computer.
This can be done on the gps using windows explorer.
To start the "DG Destinator" just click on the Destinator icon on the desktop "NOT the G400" thats it.
Some enhancements that I have noticed is that it locks on the the sats faster and that reception has improved again (how it does this I give up????) also on the main screen that you can move to Day/Night screen and 2D/3D layout without going through the menu.

If I find out a better way to do this will let everyone know.

All the best Geordie

Well done for posting the link to the updated console software (Paul) - and great work kenwood on getting it working :)

Trying it out it does give the first impressions of a step back by cluttering the screen up more like the previous version of Destinator did with too many large icons on the map screen. I can't see any other improvement other than the extra icons as yet so I'm not sure if I will continue to use it or not..?

Need help...
I had been browsing and looking at this forum for a week now and finally attempt to try firmware upgrade on a PB GPS400..

All went well quite well accordig to plan, but after removing the SD card, according to the instruction, the unit will re-boot and hangs at the Packard Bell grayscale screen...

I tried hard reset, and I tried re-flasing back to 5.1 and reflasing to 5.5. Nothing works and it still hangs at the Packard Bell screen.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

HI - looks like all the amateurs coming out at once....
I'm also trying this upgrade. I'm assuming that I can use the maps sd/mmc card thayt came with the unit. I extracted the install files and ended up with the 2 .nb0 files. Using explorer I copied them to the root of \SDMMC which appeared under Mobile Device in explorer. I notice the file sizes differed slightly once copied (some conversion took place due to it being mobil device perhaps although the window said "conversion: None")

Anyway with these files, the VDG just doesnt work. Loads normally but with lost settings so I have to recalibrate etc. Am i going in the right direction?

Any help appreciated.

@ Chris - Remember what you are trying to do when you upgrade your unit could potentially leave you with a non functioning GPS that is, from a practial sense, impossible to recover.
I placed the files on my SD card via a card reader and not via the Destinator Console. I assume that it is very important that no conversion takes place.
Just read the posts in this thread to see what needs to be done to ensure that the PB400 then reads these files to upgrade the firmware to 1.07 and Destinator application to 5.5

Remember though that it does take a certain timing with the use of the buttons to upgrade the unit and there is a chance that if it does go wrong your unit can be FUBAR.

BTW - I haven't got a clue what you mean by VDG but still reading this thread should give you all the information that you need.

tyman - Sorry I can't offer you any help - you are at the position that I would simply dread to be in. Almost like when I had a bios corrupt on my motherboard, but at least I could remove the bios chip and replace it with another and then reprogram the chip.
I really hope that someone can help you with this.
Best of luck.

Vimes..thanks for the reply. Somehow it came back to life...
(Sorry for the long post)

This is what I have done...
1. Leave the unit turned ON and I went to run some errands after posting. The idea is to drain the battery completely...ie main battery, RTC battery etc
2. I plugged in the 12V power cable when teh battery is fully drained and it wakes up to the same grayscale screen-.
3. I remove power, plugged power in again and the unit boots up.....
But it has another issue...after booting up, it is not detecting the map I have in the SD card

4. Tried hard-reset, now it is stuck at the grayscale screen again...I am back at square one..

By the way, last night I discovered a factory test mode...

If you can get to the point of having a booting unit tyman I wouldn't bother doing a hard reset again...!!!!!
As for not finding the maps, I assume that you are referring to Destinator and not TomTom. Have you tried reinstalling the map with the Destinator Console...? You do have a folder on your SD card called....
DestinatorApps - with a subfolder called...
UK_Ireland - within that is the map data.
Have you tried just using the SD card that the unit came with...?

I think that you now need to change your name from tyman to Lazarus

Yea...i should not have done that...many should not have in life...hey, but gotta live with it...still learning everyday.

My friend game me this unit and the 12V cable...no CDs etc, but have a SD card that has a local (Asia) map in it. It was working OK ie detecting it before i "upgrade"...

I am requesting for an image of the CD in another thread

Lazarus? hmmm..i am afraid i did not catch the joke...BTW, I am based in Asia...

Note:I know some of you may think that this is a "Hot" item i can tell you it is not, but i only could say my friend knows someone who works at ..
