Earlier I had an issue with the rbt-1000 that I own. It would not get a sat signal anymore, and I had to RMA the unit. From looking at reviews, I purchased the new rbt-2010. I have only had it 3 days...and it is now having the same problem!
I just sent the following email to seidio (where I bought it) trying to get some help.
Hello there,
I have had the rbt-2010 for no more than a week now, and it no longer is able to get a Satellite fix. It worked fine for about two days, but now does nothing.
I have tried pulling the battery. I have tried a cold restart using the GPS demo program from royaltek. The demo program now sows that the unit thinks that it is 2080/01/05 and can find NO satellites at all.
Is there anything that I can try? IS there another program that I can load on my PDA to try to fix this? The only thing on Royaltek’s site for this model is the RBT-2001 utility for PC/PPC/Plam (size about 919k)
Please help!
Does anyone have any ideas? Is there some other software that I can load on the axim to truly reset this thing? |

OK, a bit disturbing, but it worked. I went to the top of a parking garage with no obstructions at all...and that worked. It is dissapointing that the same thing was not working from the dash of my car. I didn't think that I would need to get an antenna for the rbt-2010. Also, I'm not sure if it was being on top of the parking garage, or if it was having the battery out of it for an hour.
Do you think that I really need to get an antenna? I can't believe that having it sit on my dash wasn't good enough for it to get the needed downloads. |

1. It takes much longer to get an itital fix as much more data has to be downloaded. Subsequent ones are much faster.
2. While a GPS can keep a lock in bad circumstances, it will have trouble getting an intial lock in bad circumstances. If you were trying to get a lock under a parking garage then this behavior is to be expected.
3. Do you have a metalized windshield? This will pretty much keep any unit from getting a lock?
Right now you seem to have too many variables (battery, new location, etc.) to give any real advice. Run for a while and see what happens and then report back.

1. Yes and just to clarify the ephemeris data needs to be downloaded every 4 hours, what happens is if you leave your GPS on, it will update the ephemeris data every 30 minutes, provided it has enough signal available. This is true for any GPS, regardless of how powerful it is, 2. Yes, that's detailed in the link, you need at least 28dB-Hz, again this is true for any GPS, regardless of how powerful it is. 3. And behind a coated windshield <28dB-Hz do no fix.
Good that it works anyway ;-)

Yes, thanks very much for the advice! I'm also glad that it is working. The next time that it is unable to aquire a signal from the dash, I will try standing outside if possible. If it does get the signal then...I will need to buy an antenna. I do have tinted windows on the sides and rear, the front windshield is not however.
My wording from earlier was poor. I stood on the top of a parking garage that is one of the highest points in the city, with no covering at all...just a perfect view of the sky. |
