UPDATE:

http://www.gpspassion.com/upload/GPS%20Macro.zip

Hi,

I've created a new version of my earlier add-in for excel and also made an easier way of importing the data for those of you that had trouble with that.

To install:
Open the zip file, then extract the enclosed data filter zip to the C:.

Open excel, tools menu, add-ins, browse to the GPS.xla file and open, then ensure it is ticked in the add-ins box. Excel is a bit flakey and you may need to do this again on occasion.

To use:
Rename the NMEA text file you wish to analyse to Data.txt and overwrite the Data.txt file in C:\GPS Data Filter\
Open the MS Access file GPS Converter.mdb and run the query GPS_Output.
Then use the Analyse it in Excel funtion in tools > Office links.

An excel sheet will open with the data in the correct format for running the macro on. The query also takes out any superfluous sentances meaning that a longer time period can be loaded into Excel with its 65k line limit.

Now, in the Excel tools menu, select GPS.

After some working, a dialogue box will appear asking you to select some options. Once you have selected your timezone etc, press run then watch and wait... It may take some time to run if there is a lot of data.

I would appreciate any feedback anyone can give me...

Many thanks, Dan.
Please feel free

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi,

I have created an add-in for MS excel that takes an NMEA log file and analyses the data in it. It outputs plots of long/latitude in distance units, as well as alt over long, and speed and alt over time. It also calculates various information such as total distance, max speed, average speed, etc..

I have developed it primarily for use analysing the performance of earthmover tyres, where vehicles generally travel in cycles (load - haul - dump - etc), however, I'm sure there are other applications where it might be useful.

I have tested it with a few different data sets, but only in Australia. If anyone would be kind enough to test it for me in a different part of the planet and/or give me feedback and suggestions, I would be most grateful.

If you would like to help, let me know and if I can figure out how, I will post a copy up here, or email a copy to you... with instuctions for use.

Thanks
Dan.

Sounds interesting, you can upload it here using this method http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=14251

Ok, I have uploaded it to http://www.gpspassion.com/upload/GPS.zip

Install the addin in excel, then import an NMEA log file in txt format using import external data. Choose comma as the seperator, then, and this is critical, make sure all fields are imported as TEXT.

Then run the GPS macro from the tools menu.

Select the time zone you are in.

The TKPH is a function of load on a tyre multiplied by average speed of travel. You can leave this unchecked or put in a value (average family car tyre would be around 0.25T - Large earthmover tyre load could be around 100T)

Press run and watch it work.

Any comments would be much appreciated.

I'm guessing this could be an issue related to different sentence strings being recorded in logs from different devices... I'm using a BT338, but if you could post the txt log file that would be useful.

Thanks.

Has anyone else been able to try this and get it to work?

I'd also appreciate it if I could get hold some NMEA logs in .txt form, from various devices and from various parts of the world...

Thanks,
Dan.

make sure when you import the text file, all the columns are imported as TEXT and not GENERAL, or it will not work...

Could you post your log file so I can try running it?

Thanks.

Your log worked fine when imported into excel and run in the macro. I'm not sure what you are doing wrong, perhaps try importing it and running again?

I'll email you the resulting file to show you what it should look like...

I tried loading the version you uploaded here in Excel from Office 97. It didn't load anything visible at all. Can you save your updated version to an older format and it still works?

I created it using office 2003, I don't know whether it will work in previous versions unfortunatly.

I'm getting "9: Subscript out of range" error. Running Excel 2002.

I'll keep playing with it. I think it will be useful as I'd been doing this manually (plotting speed, acceleration, etc).

Thanks for sharing!

Try "Save As.." and you should get a selection of formats to save in. How many depends on the Office installation options. If you rerun the Office installation program from Settings, Add and Remove programs, you add more translation formats.
