UPDATED BY GPSPASSION 20110701 : It's this time of the year again, and for 2011 there is a free official...iPad app (probably iPhone to) with live data, videos, all the profiles, etc...avaialable for free in the Appstore.

Anyway, just curious if anyone has attempted to create the routes for each stage of Le Tour in the s/w of their choosing.
I don't suppose there would be any real point to it unless someone were interested in trying to ride (or drive) the routes at a later date, but thought it might be a fun thing to do.
Anyone?

I'm a HUGE TdF fan and the next three days are going to be a treat with non-stop coverage of the three stages in the Alps...
I hadn't thought of recreating the routes, but you can find some super-detailed Roadguides on the TDF sites if you're so inclined.

Yep, it's about to get *VERY* interesting.
We get pretty good coverage over here on OLN (Outdoor Life Network)....though they tend to pick up the coverage roughly halfway through each stage.
O'Grady & Geslin must have been disappointed today after being on the breakaway for so long and lose it in the last 1k. But Petacchi has been just *amazing* in the sprints finishes. He just looks to be in a league all his own this year.
Does anyone over your way think Lance is likely to have any serious competition before it's over?

The TdF site IS very well done, and I can get all the info I'd need/want there. Just thought maybe some of the natives might be following it a little closer. But I guess unless the s/w package had topo capabilities, it probably wouldn't be quite as interesting.

I just spent 5 years in the US and was very miserable each July until 2001, having to rely on the horrendous ABC coverage. Finally in 2001, I broke down and got Dishnetwork and got to follow the 2001 TdF and 2002 Giro/TdF/Vuelta.
Phil (Liggetisms and Paul (not the Everly Brothers of course...) are really good, but their sidemen are generally not up to par. Last year there was a massive idiot called Billy Patrick or something like that. He had no clue at all. I understand fom reading rec.bicycles.racing that he's been canned in favor of young lady...
Ironically, I missed the Giro this year as it's not carried on the main networks in France, only on cable/satellite and I don't have that yet.
Here comes the first day of FULL coverage, yes!

Kirsten Gum is her name. She's never covered anything cycling related before, so doesn't offer much in terms of knowledgeable commentary, but seems like a decent enough 'setup man'.
Bob Roll is back this year, and as a former Tour rider, he's knowledgeable, but is a little too full of himself at times, IMO. And Frankie Andreu is there too, but his role is pretty much limited to pre/post interviews with whatever riders they can catch.
I guess I've tended to think of the OLN coverage as better than it might really be because it is *SO* much better than we've ever had available in the States previously. But to someone who's used to the kind of professional coverage that we might expect of football or baseball, I guess OLN might be a bit less than stellar.

I noticed in a message in a different forum a mention of you being out on the road recently. Was it TdF related trip? Just thought you might have been amongst the gazillion fans lining the climb up L'Alps D'Huez.
