I have no experience with that product. It would be nice if someone who has tried it could let us know a bit about it. I just briefly checked their website. They do seem to provide street level maps even for Brazil and Argentina.

I wonder who their map data provider is.

I used Streets & Trips 2005 near 10,000 kilometres across Canada and US this winter, I love it but some time I had a dangerous situation with it : The application may stop responding or it may respond very slowly when zoomed in and out after one or two hours of driving… When your are entering in a city and need more details to exit a highway or entering in small street it’s a big problem when your are driving a 45 foot truck and 5 wheel combination!
Did you have a similar problem with this software ?

I also use Delorme's Street Atlas 2004. I don’t expect that kind of problem with it. But I don’t like it that much, I find it more complex to use, we need more time to plan a trip, his cartography (Road design) is poorer and finally it incomplete for Canada.

After your comments on iGuidance V. 2.1, I’m planning to try it on my next travel… If Streets & Trips 2006 is not on the market !

By the way do you know a good mapping software for Mexico and Baja California ?

I'm not aware of any other laptop software that comes with navigable map of Mexico other than Microsoft Streets & Trips. The coverage in the current 2005 version is still very minimal, but NavTeq, the map data provider, has one month ago today released "enhanced" map of Mexico. Let us hope this will give enough time to Microsoft to implement this new coverage to MS Streets & Trips 2006. More details about this new Mexico map by NavTeq read here: http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=16861

I wonder if you could just hit the "Go" button of the "Recalculate route..." feature as prevention to this performance slowdown after one or two hours of navigation on S&T. Or instead of opening GPS Task pane and clicking on the button you could use S&Tkeys and just hit F6-key on your keyboard once every hour as prevention. I wonder if that would help. More info on S&Tkeys is >>here<<

Tanks for your suggestion. I had already install S&Tkeys on my laptop, it’s working great and I will try F6 at my next trip of more than 2 hours

If you do decide to give iGuidance a try, there is iGkeys downloadable >>here<< It's the same idea like S&Tkeys ;-) And you may have both running on your laptop at all times.

Speaking about have both running on my laptop at all times, I had run two windows of S&T at the same time at different scale (to avoid zooming) one with Deluo GPS and the other one with Rayming TN 200 GPS. It was working but after a while (± 1 hour) I had freezing on one and finally on both… I try also Delorme's Street Atlas 2004 and S&T in same time, each one with a different GPS, I had no problem with Delorme…

The best price I found for iGuidance Navigation Software V2.1 is CAD$139.95. By the way you will see the picture of my Laptop installation in my truck at the same address: http://www.gpscentral.ca/products/rayming/tn200usb.htm

Tanks for all these information

P.S.: Excuse my poor English but I am French speaking…

Nice picture, nice setup you have! Here is a link to mine: >click< Actually, I should update the picture, because now there is also my new toy PDA Phone i-mate JAM near the 15" monitor ;-)

Yes, you can run even several instances of MS Streets & Trips (or other GPS software) at the same time. There is no need to buy another GPS receiver to do that. Read tip # 18 titled: " Share one GPS between several applications" in the Tips & Tricks for Streets & Trips section: http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=21067

I think CAD$139.95 is a good price for iGuidance 2.1.

The Tips & Tricks for Streets & Trips is very interesting, I know some one but I learn many new things… You probably know the following site from where we may import DATA for S&T like Walt Mart, Flying J, camping, dump stations, etc.

Tanks again for help

Thanks for the link. I just briefly looked thru it and I will check it out more thoroughly later. I see that they have information about some interesting places that I bet many users wish were included POI's of future versions of S&T. Of interest may also be the road height-restriction info, too. That is actually my question to you: how do you navigate your big rig with S&T since S&T is not aware of height restrictions? There are a lot of truckers in North America using S&T and also in Europe guys use MS AutoRoute. What do you do in this respect? I think this one deserves to be added to our wish list ;-)

I too have the problem of S&T 2005 freezing after a couple of hours. Not sure but think the problem might be caused using the "breadcrumb trail" feature. I never had a problem with the 2004 version.

Yes that I have heard of. I myself don't use the Create GPS Trail feature; I only used it on a few occasions, and definitely not for over two hours continuously. I did hear some users mentioning that after extended period of time with this feature enabled there is a problem.

Hmm, but what do you mean you never had a problem with 2004 version? Create GPS Trail feature was only added in 2005 version ;-)

1) I didn’t had any problem with the S&T 2004 too. The freezing trouble is generated by the new feature of the 2005 version. When I use S&T it’s usually for a long period (5 to 7 or 8 hours) and I use all functions on the pane: track, keep position, rotate map and GPS trail. I also zoom in when I approaching city or exchange, and out in the middle of no where… Generally it freezing when I am zooming in !

2) The road height-restriction are usually not a problem because the law of a majority of states and provinces are a minimum of 13.5 feet of clearance. I am 12.2 feet. Usually when I go visiting the country I drop the 5 wheel in a camping. But we have to pay attention when we go across town in old streets or old quarter… We don’t go where heavy truck are prohibited; it’s not on the map but with the S&T map and GPS it’s very easy to find a new way.

We have to pay attention to gas stations (Some top are at 11 feet) and small bridges but usually they have a sign. Just one time I had to go around for a railroad bridge. Its was not on the S&T map but it was well indicated with detour for heavy truck.

Well, then it may be the "Create GPS Trail" feature that really causes the crashing. Try not to use that feature. It's really not needed unless you have a particular reason to draw a line on the map to know where you have traveled. If you do decide not to use it on your next long distance trip, please let us know if S&T still crashes or not.

If you do want to use Create GPS Trail feature, then after an hour or so of driving hit F12 twice. In conjunction with S&Tkeys hitting F12 twice will turn off and then turn on the Create GPS Trail feature ;-)

I think "Create GPS Trail" feature may really causes the crashing.

I did not to use that feature for a trip of 100 km (about 1 hour) this afternoon and I was using 2 GPS and 2 windows of S&T in the same time; that was usually accelerate the freezing… I also select track and keep position and rotate map on both and live the Pane open on one window. During the run I zoom in and out many times on both windows…

No problem at all !!! Every thing was running perfectly…

Next weekend I go to Montreal, it’s 2 hours driving, I will try it again… with and without GPS trail… Usually when the freezing or slowing down start, the only way to correct it completely is to restart de laptop. If it’s happen I will try just stop "Create GPS Trail" and see …
