| Newby here...I'm looking for a tracking device that is not GSM-reliant and can transmit its position directly back to the satellite. I need this to track a weather-balloon flight. The tracker (and the balloon) will most likely be lost, so I'm looking for a cost-effective device, I dont't care if it's of poor quality...as long as it works once that's all I need. I have seen some very cheap devices made in china, they all say they use GSM/GPS communication, I'm not sure if this means they need both in order to function, or they can communicate directly to the satellites even without a SIM card in it. I know this is probably a basic and silly question, but any enlightment from the gurus here will be very much appreciated. Thanks |

If you have a tracking device, how can it be lost? :)
You might want to check out SPOT. It is used by hikers and motorcyclists, uses GPS technology and will display a track/location on a web site. Google SPOT Tracker to find out more. |

Yes SPOT could be a solution if you want to track it in flight where there is no GSM coverage, but if you just need a track, you could get a GPS datalogger and a cheap GPS/GSM tracker to retrieve the lot once it comes back to earth.
Can you describe your project in some more detail so we can try to see what would work best? |
