I have a Nuvi 500 I wanted an outlet to plug in the GPS to the dash on my motorcycle. I bought a 1 amp USB outlet but it doesn't work very well. If you plug in the cord it restarts the GPS. If you start the bike the power is momentarily disconnected and the GPS restarts. Is this related to the pull down resistors I've read about or is the socket I bought a piece of junk? I have moved your question to the nuvi forum.
The short answer is that most Garmin GPSes require you to use the OEM power cord. They go into data mode or otherwise won't function when plugged in "straight" to USB power.

I bought a used Garmin Nuvi 350 this spring. I have a device that offers 1 or 2 amps on a USB connector. I have had great luck using that to power the Garmin Nuvi 350.
My Garmin Nuvi 500, however, behaves just as the other poster described, so I guess it just depends on which Garmin unit you use. |

Another solution is to use the OEM cable and add an actual cigarette-lighter outlet like [url=http://www.gpscity.com/ram-mount-female-cigarette-lighter-socket-with-bare-wires.html]this one[/url], along with the OEM-type cable. I have that kind of setup with my hidden wiring in my Miata for the traffic-receiver cable on my 3750.
If I were going that route I'd put a molex connector on the bike and the other half on the cigarette outlet adapter, then make a second half with heat-shrink on it to seal off the bike's connector when you're not using the GPS. If moving the GPS to different vehicles isn't a consideration you might heat-shrink the cigarette lighter connectors together too so they don't come apart on the bike. |

I had originally hardwired a Gilsson hardwire cable with mini USB to power my 765 with. This would drop the voltage to the 5V for USB. I cut the wire and wired a 2 position connector which nestles nicely near the top of the triple trees on my bike. Then I put the mating connector on the other half of the cord with the USB on the end...nice length to wrap around my GPS mount a few times for strain relief. The only issue was the GPS display would not go full bright. After some research, I tried two or three other USB cables that I'd cut and put the connector on and eventually I got full display by going into the brightness menu and adjusting it down one click and then back up again. For some reason this worked...every time I'd power up with this cable on the bike, I'd have to adjust the brightness down and up again.
I used this cable for several years including a 5500 mile trip to the east coast and a 1500 mile run to Sturgis. Then it became flaky. The mini USB got intermittent.
Now I've removed the Gilsson hardwire and replaced it with a direct to battery 12V line with the 2 position connector up by the bars. On the Nuvi, I'm using a stock-style 12V power connector plugged into the Nuvi's power cradle with the mating 2 position connector on the other end.
This has been working great for the past couple years. When not in use, I remove the RAM mount and the short cable running from the triple tree to the Nuvi leaving only a little of the 12V line and 2 position connector visible on the bike.
If your Nuvi has a 12V in as well as the 5V in, I'd opt for getting the full 12V for a more stable device. |
