I have a nuvi 750 which has always been a disappointment. The darn thing is so sloooow that it is almost useless when we need it the most - fast moving city traffic.

The maps are several years out of date. It seems to me that the cost of updating the maps might be a better spent simply buying a newer, faster unit.

How do the newer widescreen nuvi's like the 1300 compare?

Any other suggestions?

Thanks
Tom

I have a 750 which I replaced with a 2460LMT and overall I am happy with the improvements. One of the main complaints I have is how out of date the POI's are. For example, the branch of my credit union which I have used for over 5 years is STILL NOT LISTED. However, this is not really a 2460 issue but actually appears to be an issue on all GPS units since I can't find my branch on Tom Toms or Magellan units either. The other issue I have is how worthless the traffic is on this unit and I live in the suburbs of a major city (San Diego).

Thanks for the info.

Since you are in San Diego, I imagine you have to do some highway speed driving through the metropolitan area. Does the 2460 consistently tell you when to exit before you come to the exit? That is my main gripe with the 750. When there are several exits bunched close together, half of the time it doesn't tell me to turn until it is too late. Sometimes that even happens with in-town traffic that is moving at the speed limit.

Thanks again!

Welcome to our forum Tom.

Just to be clear, the POI's are part of the map data so no matter which Nuvi you were to use the POI database would be the same as long as they were all running the same version of City Navigator maps. Also the free lifetime traffic really isn't an issue of the 2460, as again every Nuvi, with the possible exception of those that use HD Traffic, is going to receive the same traffic information in any given area.

I'm not really sure that going from the 750 to a 1300 is really a major update. I personally found this when comparing my 760 to the 1490 (same series as the 1300). In addition you'll be loosing things like the ability to create preplanned multi point routes, which the 1300 doesn't support. The whole 1xxx series can't be far off from being discontinued as there are now a number of models newer and if I was looking to update from a 7x0 model, I'd be looking at something newer. You could look at the 24xx models as Brent suggests and there are also 25xx, 37xx and 34xx models to consider.

One more reason to consider something newer than the 1300. Pretty much all of the newer models will have 2 features to help you with the exit issue, other than they will be faster. These are called Junction View and Lane Assist.

Junction View will display a photoreal picture of an exit as you approach it, clearly displaying which lane to be in to get to your destination. Lane Assist will display lane arrows in the top left corner of the map screen. It highlights the lanes you should use to make your next turn. Both are very useful. I'm not sure if either of these features are available on the 1300 but if they are the number of intersections/exits covered by the Junction Views will be very limited, by default.

That brings me to another reason why the 1300 may not be the best solution for you, as an upgrade. It only has 2GB of internal storage which is no longer big enough to store the full City Navigator North America maps. Your forced to use an SD card to store the full map set and the full, non limited, junction view file.

Thanks for the additional info NanaimoRick!

I only mentioned the 1300 because I happened to see it with the lifetime map updates at a local store. If it is nearing the end of its market life, I definitely want something newer. The Junction View and Lane Assist sound like features that I'd be very interested in so I will definitely look for those models.

In general, we only use the GPS a couple of times a year while on trips. The 750 was better than nothing, but I'd like to move up and not miss so many exits.

Do you know if these newer models use the same mounting ball as the older ones? I only ask because I found a after-market product that works much better in my car than the standard suction cup mount, and I'd rather not have to look for a replacement.

Thanks Again!

Yes, they all use the same mounting ball.

Yes, the 2460 seems fast enough that it does not miss turns. However, I must add this caveat, I never had a problem with my 750 missing turns. This would seem to indicate that either you had a very slow 750 for some reason, or that the highways in your part of the world have too many exits too close together. Also, as mentioned previously, the Junction View and Lane Assist are a big help. Finally, since I am over 65, the larger 5" screen is a definite improvement over the 750 4.3" screen, but your mileage may very on this.
