| I love the lifetime map updates Garmin gives us every 3 months. But why do we have to download the entire map from scratch every single time? Why not just give us the updated version to the map we already have in our GPS? Garmin I hope you see this, there has to be a better way!!! |

Here is one theory of why you have to update the way you do. The actual update is made up of many, maybe hundreds, of small .img files. Each file represents a different part of North America or Europe. Part of the update process is to take all those small .img files and convert them into the large gmapprom.img file that contains all the road and POI data for all of North America or Europe.
It may well be that in any one update all or most of those individual .img files will have some change in road, address, city, poi, etc. data, from the last update. If so then each one that has changed would need to updated on the GPS. So if most of the individual pieces need to be updated then you'd end up with pretty much the same thing you have now, that being the whole map being sent to the Nuvi for the update. It would then be a question of whether it's more time consuming or efficent to just send the whole map file at once to the GPS or to send most, if not all, of the individual files independently. My guess it's the former, which is what Garmin is doing. |

Garmin has yet to discover what other companies have been doing for years (some decades) - differential patches. Imagine that MS would force people to download the whole OS every time there is an update :) Not to mention that updating OS is more difficult. I personally don't care that much (my connection averages ~20Mps) but it still takes unnecessary long time to unpack, verify and install. |

Garmin map consist of data, which is indexed and packed. Incremental update would mean unpacking, patching, re-indexing and packing again. Could be slow, when all data is on nuvi.

| I think most computer savy people would agree, it's better to do a clean install or full update than an incremental update. |
