I have compiled so-called Mio Emergency Disk.

Download:

MediaFire MioEmergencyDisk.zip
MD5: 0bb9c502471226b1248889444d752bbc
CRC32: 0e0c297e

Abstract:
Mio Emergency Disk is mainly based on the known 'magic-folder' names exemplarily listet below which are known by MiTAC devices. By nature it is simply an unlocker primarily dedicated to various MiTACS's Mio C, Moov, and Spirit devices EDIT: and Navman units, too. You can use it (perhaps also only as an example how) to get into your MiTAC's Mio C, Moov, and Spirit unit EDIT: and Navman unit, if your SatNav has an SD/MMC-card slot and it is capabable to read from SD/MMC-card. This utility especially is intended to be used by those, who do not want to create their own SD/MMC-card (prepared with small tools) - specific to their SatNav.

Updates:
The download-link provided above always directs you to latest version of Mio Emergency Disk available.

Disclaimer:
This utility is provided AS IS. I am not responsible for anything you do to your Mio device using this utility.

Usage:
You
1) download and simply unpack archive "MioEmergencyDisk_vXXX.zip" as 1:1 to root (NOT any subfolder) of an SD/MMC-card - use a standard SD/MMC-card
2) modify contents of file <sdcard>\MIO_EMERGENCY_DISK\emergency.mscr to your needs (it is currently customized for the Mio V505 TV)
3) insert SD/MMC-card into your Mio
4) remove any USB-connection with laptop/desktop PC
5) restart your Mio

This is a work in progress!
Feel free to report bugs, make improvement suggestions, etc.pp.

How to find out 'magic-folder' name, demonstrated by the example Mio Spirit S605:

(image courtesy to costas)

Excerpt of MioPocket's Readme file (courtesy to Osprey):

If the above does not help you to find the correct folder to use, connect your Moov to your computer and...
a) If you have a file named "app_startup.txt" in the root of your internal flash drive...
Open it, scroll down to the very bottom and look for the line that starts with RunSDCardExecutable. That line will look something like this...

RunSDCardExecutable(SmartST_CE - Run()): CreateProcess(\Storage card\\auto.exe) failed, error 2

...with "" being the folder name that your device requires. Create that folder on your SD card and proceed to step 4Bii below.

b) If you have a file named "version.ini" on the internal flash drive in \Program Files\Navman\SmartST_CE\...
Open it, look under the [VersionInfo] section for the "Name" entry. Create that folder on your SD card and proceed to step 4Bii below.

c) If you have a file named "device.xml" in the root of the internal flash drive, open it in a text editor. Look for a "" tag and create on your SD card a folder named for what's between "" and "". If that tag does NOT exist, look for a string that starts with "Mantas" and name the folder that. If either method works, proceed to step 4Bii below.

d) Read the firmware version listed (usually in white on black text) when you boot the device up and use the first code that comes after "Cobia". For example, the Moov360's firmware version starts with "COBIA 420", so the folder should start with "Cobia_420" (note the capitalized first letter, the following lower-case and the underscore). After that, for most devices, comes the amount of internal RAM, "_32" for 32MB devices and "_64" for 64MB devices. Finally, North American models append "_NA" on the end and Australian models append "_AU" on the end.

As mentioned here

it should work with C520, because C520 searches for "MioAutoRun.exe", which is part of "Mio Emergency Disk" introduced here.

Added some magic-folders, added two .REG-files to allow touchscreen calibration via importing a .REG-file, and some other additions. Re-uploaded "Mio Emergency Disk v3": see post #1.

With the new Navman series (ex. S100 and later) you need to first connect the unit to a computer and using Windows Explorer look in it's flash drive (should be the first of the two drives that will come up) for a file called "source.txt". Open it and it should look something like this:

Created: 2008-09-26 21:21:36:984375000
Software: MERMAID_405 6.00.0048
Map Data:NT_AU_0802_4014
Map Region:AU
Part Num: 565117210203R02

The "MERMAID_405" bit is what you name the 'magic folder' name for the S100.

S150 MERMAID_425
S200 MERMAID_455

Although this thread initially was thought only to be useful for MiTAC's Mio devices, I completed, ought to abrams's contribution, list of 'magic-folder* names for MiTAC's Navman units in post #1.

Wishlist:

Thanks for your feedback.

1) Fixed typo.
2) Added a (dummy) Disclaimer.exe - the original Disclaimer.exe simply is a renamed explorer.exe.
3) Added some more (useful?) utility-applications, as those also come with MioPocket and other unlockers.
4) Added the whole bunch of MiTAC Navman's 'magic-folder' names - but who needs this?

Re-uploaded "Mio Emergency Disk" (v4). See post #1.

@jb110,

Anyone can use the tool and modify according to his ideas, there are no fixed rules for it. Means it is only in you, to fulfill the script named with more life. For example, if you first of all (additionally?) want to calibrate your unit's touchscreen, when device boots, then you simply add some lines as following prior then Filemanager (by default) gets started:

### Start registry editor to import a .REG-file in order to set correct touchscreen coordinates
rfile=pth\"Registry\Touch"&ScreenWidth()&"x"&ScreenHeight()&".reg"
If((NOT FileExists(pth\"TOUCHCALIBRATIONDONE.txt")&&FileExists(rfile))
	RunWait(pth\"Program Files\TRE.exe","/s "&rfile)
	WriteFile(pth\"TOUCHCALIBRATIONDONE.txt","",0)
        Sleep 2500
	Reset
	Sleep 1000
	Run(pth\"Program Files\SoftReset.exe")
EndIf

As you might see, the possibilties are endless.

Happy Mortscripting!

good work
you're the man

2 issues i have

(i) k.toolhelp.dll, which is required on windows embedded ce 6 units, is missing. providing toolhelp.dll alone is not enough

(ii) an empty folder MIO_RECOVERY_DISK to store folders/files to be copied onto flash drive, should be there

Got yesterday from Mio Technology Europe the following e-mail concerning 'Mio Emergency Disk' (excerpt):

Original (German):

Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren,

Dies ist ein Hackertool und ist illegal sich in unsere Geräte einzuhacken. Sobald Sie dieses Tool verwenden werden Sie keinen Garantianspruch mehr am Gerät beziehen können.

Mio Technology Europe technischer Support

English (translation):

Ladies and Gentlemen,

This is a hacking tool, hacking is illegal in our devices. Once you use this tool, you will no longer have warranty on the device.

Mio Technology Europe technical Support

Unlocking Illegal?

NO. Read more here. So in case you previously had any doubts about getting into legal trouble for unlocking your MIO so that you can run on it applications of your choice, you don’t have to because as of today, it is officially legal in United States and European Union to run OEM-unauthorized apps.

While it may be legal, Mio (just like Apple) warns that your warranty is void. In reality, what it means is that if you have an "issue" and can't restore your device to something resembling a factory configuration before returning it for service, then your warranty is void.

gday from downunder :) i hope i'm not indicative of most aussies in that i'm struggling to understand quite how to get this working (and if indeed its the right thing).

my moov 360 crapped itself all by its own without me doing any mods to it (i never knew you could until now!). I used it last week + all good (standard untouched gps) and next day it would just load to a usb-pc connection screen and freeze at that. I tried all the little tips i found elsewhere with fast resets, on/off/reset 25 times, anything i could find but the same result. there is no usb support when i plug it in to the PC, it doesnt even recognize a connection (which is why i thought emergency disk may be the hope).

after much looking around, i found this thread, downloaded the files and at least i can now get a screen something thats not a usb-pc screen, but an error window that says :

"script file not found: '\Storage card\Cobia_420_64_AU\Cobia_420_64_AU\MIO_EMERGENCY_DISK\Emergency.mscr'

now ive read and re-read and retried a few things from the instructions supplied at the start of this thread, but I either get the USB-PC screen again or back to this message. I know it says modify the emergency.mscr to suit my needs, but im just not getting it obviously.

can someone advise what either what i'm doing wrong or what to do correctly please? i'd be happy just to get a working GPS again, but if i can get it with some of the stuff I see on this forum in some of the threads, that would be wild, but i'm no genius unfortunately and i'm feeling a bit of a dummy right now.

thanks in advance for a long winded first post and if its in the wrong section or if i need to just get mio pocket or something else, please point out my silliness and i'll go do what im told :)

@buzz,
until today (480 downloads) such error was never reported:
quote:

"script file not found: '\Storage card\Cobia_420_64_AU\Cobia_420_64_AU\MIO_EMERGENCY_DISK\Emergency.mscr'

Please in folder '<sdcard>\Cobia_420_64_AU' entirely replace contents of file 'Auto.mscr' with the one listet next

Local()
pth=SystemPath("ScriptPath")
If(SystemVersion("major")=6)
	Copy(pth\"CE6_toolhelp.dll",pth\"toolhelp.dll")
Else
	Copy(pth\"CE5_toolhelp.dll",pth\"toolhelp.dll")
EndIf
Sleep 250
drv=pth
pos=Find(SubStr(pth,2),"\")
If(pos)
	drv=SubStr(pth,1,pos)
EndIf
If(NOT ProcExists("TCMD.exe"))
	CallScript(drv\"MIO_EMERGENCY_DISK\Emergency.mscr")
EndIf

and report whether success or not. TIA

At your Windows PC

1. close AS/WMDC (remove it there from Autostart, too),
2. uninstall AS/WMDC, and
3. re-install AS/WMDC.

This practice did help me often! It is NOT always the Mio which goes wrong!

thankyou for the replies guys.

hi jwoegerbauer, i shall try this tonight when i get home from work (6am here now and about to leave for the day).

hi H226, without wanting to appear silly once again, what is AS/WMDC? i no longer can find any mio software as the unit is over 2yrs old now if this is what it is and i cannot access the gps via pc anyway, it does not recognize it as a connection as the gps just freezes just after the orange mio explore more screen (usb-pc screen) and thats it.

cheers!

ha! ive done something good without even knowing what im doing i'll get the latest version and change the script as you have previously instructed and then have another look if it doesnt get too late tonight.
thank you very much jwoegerbauer, your work for all of us around the world for nothing but our gratitude is very inspirational and i wish i had a fraction of your abilities (and others here also on GpsPassion also). mate, you are a champion regardless if i can manage to get it working or not

am i correct that this will just help me get into it to restore it to working like original (not modify it as such) and if i want to do some of the wild stuff i see in other threads, i have to get miopocket or similar?

ps: its not buzz but bazz which is aussie slang for barry, but you can call me whatever you like as im very happy to have your assistance hehe

late note: got v5 and i seem to have the same windows, same files, etc but i just keep going around in circles and end up back in the same window and cant get anything to run (and im not sure if flash card should have anything in it, just has device.xml at zero bytes and cant open it anyway but nothing else in the directory). ive a rotten headache, so i'll try more tomorrow :)

AS -> ActiveSync (Windows XP and earlier)
WMDC -> Windows Mobile Device Center (Windows Vista and later)

Don't get confused: It's the same, only name has changed! But ActiveSync is the term all around the world till today is used.

ahh, active sync would do me no good at present as i cant get a connection to the pc, as it locks on the usb-pc screen on the gps and even with the twin screens from the rescue disc here, i still cant get any connection with the pc to show up as yet (i cant remember but im sure when i used to plug in the gps a couple of years ago, it identified as a drive, which it doesnt now).

the kids are at me to go take a radio controlled buggy out for a run and the missus is at me to get some potato wedges on the go, so i better go make everyone happy for now and check back in later after i have another looksee at the mio and a bit more of a read as im not getting any joy with it at present in sunny south australia. :)

well guys, im at a loss at how to get this thing working again.
it boots into a black screen with cobia firmware number, into the mio explore more orange screen, then into the twin screen from the sd card.

from there, i have no idea how to progress anything. i would have assumed i should have some info in the /my_flash_disk folder, where there is nothing except device.xml which is zero bytes. anything i pretty much try tells me i either dont have an application associated with the files or i cant load an exe as its already open or most often is i come back to the screens.

can someone advise what im doing so wrong (or do i have the wrong files/program in trying to get it working again) or if i need another lot of files/another program to get it to work or if perhaps its lost some files in the gps from the flash drive or whatever is inside which has rendered it kaput.
obviously im struggling to understand but where i see signs of life, i see that maybe i can get it working again even in standard config (which i thought this emergency disk was) i'd rather do that than throw it in the bin.
we have a long weekend coming up here in south australia this week and i'd really like to have a working gps without having to buy another, but i need some help :(

can someone take pity on me and put me out of my misery please?

Hallo, I tried Emergency disk for Mio GPS and hoped to help me with my problem (failed unlock of Moov V505TV with Blue Fish SW, now boots to orange screen with no USB connection only). I tried to apply this SW according to the described procedure but no change - still orange. It looks like the GPS ignores the card. Since the SW has been pre-configured to the same device as I have I have done no changes to the SW, only unzipped it to the card root I assume the problem might be in the memory card type I have. I use no Kingston 2GB mini SD formatted as FAT. Does it need to have a some special name? Or is there anything I missed and which prevents me from proper execution of your SW?
Does anyone have similar experience with using this SW on Moov V505TV?
Thanks a lot in advance for any help.

The orange screen indicates your unit is half dead and thiss disc will be of no help so look at the Moov threads on how to restore your unit. Then unlock with miopocket and it works perfectly.

Good work, but obviously it doesn't work on any occasions. I tried emergency disk on Mio Moov 330 which is stucked on the orange screen, with corrupted PC connection..
When I insert SD with folder Cobia_410_64 I get this msg:

Script file not found: '\Storage card\MIO_EMERGENCY_DISK\Emergency.mscr'

is there anything need to be changed/added into auto.mscr in order to get into the wince desktop from where I can restore original files and folders?

Thanks

Do not use mini or micro cards as some give errors only sdhc cards which are completely blank and do a full format load the correct rom for your specific model and then try the disc before trying to unlock.

Reviewed 'Mio Emergency Disk V5'. Contents of script 'Auto.mscr' is correct. Nothing to change. Script 'Emergency.mscr' is present in disk's subfolder MIO_EMERGENCY_DISK.

Question:

Is folder MIO_EMERGENCY_DISK present on SD-card where you copied 'Mio Emergency Disk V5' onto?

Sad to go

My Medion E4230 (a Mio clone) no longer works. I currently have an Apical. Very happy with this.

I will not be able to continue maintenance of Mio Emergency Disk, etc.

Sorry to go, but it has been fun.

I will keep subscribed to this thread to see if anything comes up I need to respond to.

Mio Emergency Disk is CE independent: works both on CE 5.0 and CE 6.0 units.

Sorry, I was not writed about situation. I renamed AppStartupSec.exe and installed Mio pocket 4.0 on that device, after NOT succesfull Mio pocket installing my computer doesn't recognize my Mio like a disk drive. When I reset mio it's only show table: "There is no application associated with "AppStartupSec", Run the application first, then open this file from within application". I still hope to use this emergency disk to recover my PNA.

If you read the instructions carefully for MP4 you would see it states"Whatever you do do NOT rename AppstartupSec.exe or edit paths.xml as either will brick your device" Obviously this is what has happened and your device is dead.

Hi
I would like to perform a tocuhscreen calibration on my mio moov 200, I cant press the outer left letters. Can I just run TOUCHCAL.EXE or do I have to insert the script below?

I dont know but this script was from a preious post and does not look quite right! First I think there is a missing parenthesis on the if NOT function. Then what does it do. Execute calibration only one depending on whether the TOUCHCALIBRATIONDONE.txt exists?
Has anyone executed this? Or can explain it?
Can I just run TOUCHCAL.EXE instead?

Thanks
Dimi

Anyone can use the tool and modify according to his ideas, there are no fixed rules for it. Means it is only in you, to fulfill the script named with more life. For example, if you first of all (additionally?) want to calibrate your unit's touchscreen, when device boots, then you simply add some lines as following prior then Filemanager (by default) gets started:

### Start registry editor to import a .REG-file in order to set correct touchscreen coordinates
rfile=pth\"Registry\Touch"&ScreenWidth()&"x"&ScreenHeight()&".reg"
If((NOT FileExists(pth\"TOUCHCALIBRATIONDONE.txt")&&FileExists(rfile))
	RunWait(pth\"Program Files\TRE.exe","/s "&rfile)
	WriteFile(pth\"TOUCHCALIBRATIONDONE.txt","",0)
        Sleep 2500
	Reset
	Sleep 1000
	Run(pth\"Program Files\SoftReset.exe")
EndIf

As you might see, the possibilties are endless.

Happy Mortscripting!

Hi,
I extracted and copied the zip file into a SD card, insterted it into my Mio Moov200, restarted it but it did not boot into anything unusual except the normal map.
It as if its ignoring the SD card.

Should the Mio be connected to a usb pc before inserting the card?
Then once i inserted the card and removed the usb connection, should I turn it off (middle position) or reset it?

I have tried all combinations nothing worked. Except that whenever I press reset it asks to accept some terms about the map or something!

Thanks
