Actually this statement doesn't seem to be true. According to our very own gpspassion's testing (http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=129583) TomTom's cradle GPS chip is usable by most other Nav apps he tried on iPhone like Navigon, etc. I'm not sure about iPod touch. So to me battle of the cradles, assuming Magellan's works well, boils down to price mostly. TomTom's cradle looks slicker and smaller but Magellan's one seems to be more flexible and may adapt better to future changes in iPhone shape (provided connector stays the same). |

| Yes our new friend is not well informed it seems or is trying to "push" some inaccurate information out there (PM sent)...as you point out, the Magellan cradle is more "adaptable" and will fit the iPod Touch for a start, TomTom are making a separate Touch Car Kit available. I'm assuming that TomTom have been given "some level" of confidence that their cradle would work with upcoming iPhone models. We'll see, in the meantime the 3GS+TomTom Car Kit combo works a treat! |

Did you ever get a chance to try it on the road?
@RVGPSVA - there is no RDS Traffic receiver in the mount, if there is to be traffic information it would be over GPRS, not a problem for a permanently connected device like the iPhone. |

| It's a pretty "standard" app and still shows a lot of lag. I hope to do more with it soon and post a review. I've also ordered the car kit from Amazon and will report when it comes in. |

ditto. Still same lag and still the same problem w the speedometer. I spoke w tech support @ Magellan and they are aware of it and are working on it. They do, however, say that the speedometer problem does not exist when using the car kit. I, too, have ordered the car kit (from Magellan) and will report when it arrives.
FWIW, Magellan tech support seems very responsive, much more so than when I owned the original Roadmate 4-5 years ago. |

| With Navigon in general I found speedometer to be quite precise so I think it's an issue with Magellan software, not the absence of the kit. |

Thanks for the links, that was pretty interesting, alhtough he was too happy to have the preview kit to find anything negative to say about it ;-) Having the TomTom Kit next to it would help point out the differences too.
Clearly Magellan have sacrified the looks for extra compatibility, Touch and iPhones with a shell, that goes both ways, although with my setup (dual rubber MCA shell), the TomTom Car Kit works fine.
One thing they seem to be doing better, at least based on the video is the rotation of the mount. With the TomTom Kit I have a hard time rotating it from portrait to landscape and hing the position I like. I often need to adjust the "rotula" of the mount. |

One bad thing about the kit for me is, it was confirmed that the otterbox defender case does not work with it. The otterbox case seems to be pretty popular alot of people on the apple website forum recommend it as do I.
There is an employee (named maggie.nav) that posts on the other site and said this about the otterbox case. "I will work with management to see what kind of solutions we can do to help Otterbox users." |

Sounds like "Maggie" alright ;-)
Not familiar with the otterbox case for the iPhone but if it's anything like the cases they used to make for PDAs I can't imagine there will ever be a Cat Kit that can accomodate it! |
