| I have a Garmin Street Pilot C550. I have City Navigator North America NT 2009, CN North America NT 2010.10, and CN Mexico NT 2010.10 installed . When I select "Map Info" I see the maps listed with a check box next to each map. What will checking and unchecking those boxes actually do? In order to get to the "Map Info" screen, the map/maps have already loaded at start up. I'm trying to figure out if I can toggle between the different map sets. Help please. Thanks |

| You can "uncheck" the NT 2009 map set. Then, you will have the latest US and Mexico maps on the GPS. Depending where you are (Mexico or the US) will determine which map set loads at start up. If you leave the 2009 maps checked, the unit will ask which one you want to use (2009 or 2010.10)on start up assuming you are in the US. |

Thanks for your help. But, (isn't there always a "but") no matter what I check or uncheck the unit never asks which map I want to use. I am in the U.S. and if I only leave the Mexico maps checked, the map that loads still looks like my old 2009 City Nav. 2009. I'm puzzled.

Do you have the 2009 map set on the c550 internal memory and the 2010 US map set and Mexico map set on an SD card? I suspect that is the case. The GPS "knows" where it is by the lat/lon readings it receives from the satellites. It then calls up the appropriate map set that "covers" those lat/lon coordinates. If you have "unchecked" all the maps, I believe the unit is simply defaulting to the internal map set that was on the unit when you bought it. You can delete the old map set off the internal memory (make sure you back it up on your computer) and install the 2010 map set there. That will free up space on the SD card. I have a c580 unit which is the same as yours except your the traffic data supplier is different. I deleted the old 2009 map set and replaced it with the 2010 maps so those newer maps are the default maps. I use a 4 GIG SD card. On the SD card I too have the Mexican map set and the European map set. There is still enough room on the SD card to keep over two GIGs of mp3s that I can play through my car radio via a "Monster" cable that are normally used with iPods and other mp3 players. When I travel in Europe or go to Mexico, the unit always opens with a map set that covers the area where I am. Here is a test for you. If indeed your Mexico maps are on an SD card, remove it the next time you are in Mexico. Turn on the unit and it will display a blank screen. It won't default to the 2009 maps of the US as you are no longer there and there isn't a map set in the unit that covers the Mexican lat/lon readings the GPS is receiving. |

I don't know how I managed to get this set up this way, but it turned out that I have the 2009 maps on the memory card and both 2010 maps on the C550 internal memory. I removed the memory card and the unit started with the 2010 maps loaded. I looked put the SD card in a memory reader and looked at the gmapsupp.img on the card and it was the 2009 maps. So, if I understand what this configuration does, is 2010 loads at start up, from the internal memory. Unless, I do something to rename the maps in the unit I will always be loading the 2010.1 maps. Am I understanding this correctly?
I am one of those people that only knows enough to get himself in weird situations, but not knowledgeable enough to know how he got there and what to do next. I am grateful for your help in understanding the ball of yarn I seem to have unraveled. At least it still runs. |

| Why do you want to keep the 2009 US maps? If you think they might be useful at some time in the future, you can always just save the Garmin folder on your SD card that includes the supplemental 2009 map set on to your home computer for use later if you wished. You can then free up your SD card for mp3's, photos or other map sets such as the ones for Europe, South America, Australia or other places you think you might visit. I don't see the benefit of keeping the older US & Canada maps (2009) on the SD card you keep in your Garmin. If you have both the 2009 and 2010 maps "checked" under Map Info, I think you are correct in saying the internal map will open first. I used to have a c330 and when I had different map sets maps that covered the same area, the unit would ask which set I wanted to use when I powered up. I could prevent that from happening by unchecking the map set I didn't want to use. |
