I have bricked my Maestro 4370 by renaming the "magellan_pna.exe" to "magellan_pna_orig.exe" while trying to install MIO Pocket PC 2.0.

After rename, the GPS is not bootable and asking me to insert a SW SD and trying to reload the software.

After bricking it, there is no way to connect the GPS via USB port as a flash drive and there is no way to rename the file. The USB connection is part of the feature running under the magellan_pna.exe.

Here is what I did to rename the file by tricking the Maestro 4370 as when it want to reload the software from SD card, it will start running the "ToCopy.exe" file. By renaming the FileManCE.exe to ToCopy.exe, the GPS was tricked to load the file manager and then I have a way to copy and correct the file name back to it's original name.

Good news, I have my bricked Maestro 4370 back and rename the magellan_pna_orig.exe back to magellan_pna.exe using FilemanCE

For details refer to the following link for downloading FileManCE

http://goeken.homedns.org/Weather/Magellan3100/Magellan.htm

Here is the link to the files.

http://bbs.100gps.com/attachment.php?aid=14343

What I did:

1. Download the FileManCE from the link above.
2. copy FileManCE.exe and all the FM*.dll into the root of the SD card.
3. Rename FileManCE.exe to ToCopy.exe (this is the file Maestro 4370 looking for from the SD card to try loading and copy software from SD to GPS as it is thinking the magellan_pna.exe is not there and reload the software from SD. That is why it pop up with white box and asking for insert SD card...)
4. Fully shutdown the GPS (Press the power button for 10 seconds)
5. Insert the SD card into the SD slot.
6. Power on the GPS (press and depress in 2 seconds).
7. The GPS will boot from SD card and run the ToCopy.exe (actually FileManCE.exe).
8. The FileManCE.exe is running.
9. On the left hand side of the file window, choose /HDD/APP
10. On the right hand side of the file window, choose /SDMMC
11. In the left hand side of the file window, select the wrongly renamed magellan_pna.exe file (in my case it is magellan_pna_orig.exe)
12. From the "File" pull down menu, select copy.
13. A pop up will show copy to as /SDMMC
14. Click OK to copy the file from HDD/APP to SDMCC/ root directory.
15. When done the pop will be disappeared.
16. Perform Full Shutdown on the GPS (Press and hold the power key for 10 seconds).
17. Take the SD card out and use any SD reader to plug into a PC.
18. Rename the file back to the original name (in my case magellan_pna_orig.exe to magellan_pna.exe).
19. Re insert the SD card to the GPS.
20. Power on the GPS and let it boot into FileManCE again.
21. On the left hand side of the file window, choose /HDD/APP
22. On the right hand side of the file window, choose /SDMMC
23. From the /SDMMC folder, select the renamed magellan_pna.exe
24. From the "File" pull down menu, select copy.
25. A pop up window show copy to /HDD/APP
26. Click "yes" and the file will be copied from /SDMMC to the /HDD/APP
27. When done the window will be disappeared and you will see the original file name magellan_pna.exe in the /HDD/APP directory.
29. Now you are all set and perform a full reboot by press and hold the power button for 10 seconds then power it on again.
30. You will have your GPS back again. Cool!!!

Hope this experience help any other folks getting into trouble mess around the Magellan 4370.

I have seen all these notes about installing MIO Pocket PC to a Magellan unit. My question is why? What does this do to the GPS?

There are a lot of funs playing with MIO Pocket. It is a bonus to enhance your Magellan Window CE based GPS system be a Personal Data Assistant (PDA) that you can play with various features. You can view different kind of videos, music, check e-mail, sync outlook address book, you can manuplate file systems, and even run other GPS software, etc.

For details refer to the following link to the MP 3.0 for how to install MP on your Magellan.

Hi,
I have a 4370 that froze up and will now only get to the clock icon (timer). It moves about a quarter revolution and then freezes. I tried the procedure above and it did not help unfreeze this unit. Any ideas of what else I might try. I was thinking if I could get the bootloader code and OS on an SD card, I could get to the screen to “OS Update”, or “Bootloader Update” or “Load OS from SD Card”. Any ideas of where I get the OS Code or the Bootloader code to try this?

Thanks,
Dan

Ok, what am I missing? I have read numerous threads about restoring the maestro 4350 but I am not having any luck. :(

I placed files on the SD card and renamed them, and the 4350 does not recognize any of them so that I can access the GPS via USB.

My 4350 when turned on does about a 1/4 turn on the clock and then just sits there, no other windows come up asking to insert an SD card or anything. Please help!

After almost giving up on it, I was actually eventually able to fix mine. I don't remember exactly but I think I pressed the rest button for a very long time until eventually the unit went into factory/recovery mode and it came back up normally.
Hope this helps. Good luck.

I have a 4350 Which the clock stops spinning after quarter turn. I tried to reset to get into recovery mentioned above and installing fileman ce on an sd card but none of that worked. What I can do is get into the bootloader Where you can load the o s and perform updates. Does anyone have or can tell me where I can get the files I need for that?

To recover 4350/4370 we need someone with working device. When updating working device with content manager after making backup it checks for new OS Image (see Figure 14 here http://www.gpsmagazine.com/print/000522.php ). I think we should steal the OS Image from you PC or direct http link with some sniffer between Figure 16 and 17.

When updating OS Image supposedly will be located somewhere here:

"C:\Program Files\Magellan\Content Manager\" (i dont really think so)
"C:\Users\XXX\Application Data\magellangps.com\Content Manager" (windows vista or 7)
or standart folder for temp files

After that we should guess proper filename to flash from SD Card.
