The new cityXplorer maps (downloadable content) are now available for many Garmin units including the nuvi (click on the Accessory Maps link).
http://www.garmin.com/garmin/cms/site/us/extras/downloads
The new cityXplorer maps contain the latest mapping data for select cities/areas along with cityXplorer Enhanced Pedestrian Navigation data for those compatible (currently the 1xxx) units. This also looks to be a great value & option for those traveling to a supported city but don't need the mapping data for the entire country/continent...just purchase & download the content that you need.

Good catch, I actually got a CityXplorer demo at Garmin France yesterday and was quite impressed by the general interface of that mode (for instance you can pan the map and then center it like with Google Maps Mobile) and routing engine (real mixed pedestrian/public transit routes with detailed instructiond).
Nice to see that owners of old models are not left behind and will be able to use these $15 citymaps, albeit without the enhanced CityXplorer interface.
Nice to get the actual coverage of what you're buying too (with terrain shading!), here is Paris from https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=276&pID=37131#coverageTab

A question was brought to my attention...
quote: Will purchasing one of these cityXplorer maps be of any use to me if I don't have a 1xxx unit?
To find this out for myself, I purchased the Los Angeles cityXplorer map...
If you have the current CN maps for your country/area, purchasing a cityXplorer map for the same area will gain you nothing with a non 1xxx unit except for an updated (if your map version is not current) supplemental mapset of a city/area that you already have on your unit.
If you -do- have a 1xxx unit, this will give you the "enhanced pedestrian navigation" data but it's of course not compatible with non-1xxx units.
If you're planning a trip abroad and know where you'll be going, purchasing the cityXplorer maps may be worthwhile to you, regardless of if you have a 1xxx unit or not since you're not purchasing maps of the entire country just for one city/area. |

Yes I'd mentioned that above, nice to see users of non 1xxx units will still be able to use these maps that could certainly come in handy if you are planning a trip to Europe with a prolonged stay in one are, say London or Paris, especially since the area covered is pretty large. I like the way these maps look so much I'll post another example ;-)

| If there is no Cityxplorer map loaded, can the nuvi 1200 still be used in pedestrian mode - i.e., will it be able to function in a non-enhanced way the way nuvi 750/etc. does when it is in pedestrian mode? |

| I'm sure the 1xx0 series can still be used in pedestrian mode just like any other nuvi would be able to. Having Ciy Navigator maps installed in the area you're in will allow you to be routed in pedestrian mode. It will still be workable even with non-routing maps but those would likely be outdated. |

Yes, you would just need to uncheck the CityExplorer maps...so that means that if you only have these maps for a city you're visiting I guess you'll have to stick to the enhanced pedestrian mode or switch to the "bike" mode, on the other hand, why would you want to use the rather lacking existing pedestrian mode ?
To discuss the nuvi 1xx0 further catch up with the 1xx0 preview here http://www.gpspassion.com/fr/articles.asp?id=268 and its related forum topic. |

I want the pedestrian mode but I don't always want/need the public transit mode.
After looking at the images from the garmin page itself, everything is clearer now. I was previously looking at other images (from other websites) that showed only 3 modes - automobile, pedestrian and bike - which made me assume that the pedestrian mode interface will always be automatically littered with public transit icons. I take it now that CityXplorer maps work with the public transit mode? And that the pedestrian mode will give me a map without the public transit icons? |

Until units are actually released and someone actually tests these new modes and their capabilities on a 1xx0 unit, we are just speculating here. The CityXplorer(CX) maps are the only maps that will fully utilize the new enhanced pedestrian mode(EPM). It's also likely that simply using pedestrian mode(PM) with CX maps will automatically enable and use EPM and show all new icons/etc unless you can disable some of the display aspects of the map (unlikely). If you disable the CX maps and have City Navigator(CN) maps on the unit, the EPM and it's related icons will not be displayed but route guidance should still be in standard pedestrian mode.
Note that I have downloaded/installed the CX maps for my area (Los Angeles) and have used them on my nuvi 765 with no issue. They are exactly the same as CN maps and are routable. There are extra "points" visible on the maps (I'm assuming they are bus stops or other public transit points) but since the 765 does not have the EPM mode, they are unlabeled and unsearchable...just basically dots on the map. |

| Yes and I'm not sure what the fuss is with the icons, but they only appear in routing mode and what icons are shown depends on the routing mode that's been chosen, again use the 1xx0 topic linked above to discuss they way they work. |

| So does this mean if I have a Garmin that does NOT have Europe maps, if I purchase the Paris map, I now get detailed maps of Paris on my device? |

Nice eh ;-)
I'm a bit frustrated with the CityXplorer maps because I can't get them to run properly on the 1490T Garmin France kindly leant me, they show up in the map list but I don't get the extra features, mainly the routes with the transit system. I'm thinking they didn't get installed properly maybe, might try and buy them direct from the site to see if it helps. |

I am reposting this here, as I was redirected by the admins. Sorry for the double post. BTW, I have a 1490
I am going to Seattle next month, and am planning to use public transportation much of the time there. I'm thinking about buying the Seattle City explorer map for just that reason. My question is about how Garmin prepares these maps. Do they put in all transport option known at time of development, or does the program access information made available by localities? For Example, the Seattle Light Rail just opened about 10 days ago. Will that be provided by Garmin as an update, or will it show up some other way? If as an update, how often will City explorer maps be updated as public transportation means and routes change often. Is there any official source at Garmin to answer such inquiries?

| Well Garmin are "only" using the new "Discover Cities" Navteq maps, i.e. not doing anything special on their side, so new lines would have to come from the same source. These maps are too new to know what kind of updating they will get...hopefully better thant the standard road maps can keep errors for years on end, including one I specifically reported 4 years ago ! |

Cityxplorer Rome only covers then underground, urban trains and tramways. No buses.
This means that it NOT USEFUL.
In Rome there are too few undergrounds, trams and railways, and the buses are fundamental to reach a destination.
Moreover, if I ask to go at Via Trionfale 13977, it cannot tell me to get off at FR3 Monte Mario and walk for 4.4km, if FR3 Giustiniana is at less than 600 metres away...
Jugula!
BTW, while I was downloading it on my father's new 1350, the garmin website told me that it was substituting it to another file.
Given that I had backed it up I am not worried, but WHAT I have deleted while installing Cityxplorer Rome, and what is its file name on the 1350? |
