Glad you found it ;-) What do you mean "limited", the top three info fields are configurable to your liking, that's more than any other current GPS systems I know of ?

Looks like the nuvi 1xxx is using the same operating system/interface as the navigation computer they build for Kenwood used in the 2DIN units DNX-7240BT and DNX-9240BT released few months ago.

garmin is the way.
nuvi 300 > nuvi 350 > nuvi 660 > nuvi 255WT

hidden menu was found on 1200. go to satellites view page (left top corner for 5 sec) and press for 5 sec on middle right indicator - SNR menu will open. :)

Interface is nice. It is like macos (or vista? colours).
4gb is nice. With 500-600 kbps speed via usb.. nice.

Some advices. 2garminz, please do not disable some features like raw tracklog, spend your times to useful things! you'd better get normal keyboard layout or PROPER TESTING for the units.
Also, whare are the 5 [edit] intermediate via points on route which were in 2x5 (only one now is possible and still buggy)? Also where is the map pointer in pedestrian mode? In automotive mode during the search? How can I create multi point tour from one point to another when I am a tourist in Paris, France?

Anyone have the 1490 yet and can give a good why or why not to purchase based on their previous unit? Not looking for any responses if this is their first GPS unit. Ive had Garmin in the past and liked them but recently went to a Navigon which I love. The fact that they pulled out of the US market doesnt leave a good taste in my mouth so Im looking for some long term security and like the 1490.

Garmin 330 > Nuvi 350(3yrs and going strong) > Navigon 8100t(bring on new technology for half the price I originally paid for the 350)

According to GPScity.com the 1490 isn't scheduled to ship until June 22/09.

I'm beginning to see some good things with these new units, like the configurable data field stack. What is a turn-off for me personally is the lack of an integrated cradle like the 7x0/7x5/8xx units have. For a short time, I used a nuvi 200 and mounting/unmounting the unit was truly a sore point. I guess we'll have to wait for the "high-end" models for that feature.

Yes, I pointed out that lack of an "active cradle" to the Garmin France people and their reply was this was an "entry-level" series, too bad...one of the features I like best on my old 760 is that I can drop it on its holder and be on my way, with the device being powered and receiving traffic data.

The only Nuvi I've owned is the 880 which I sold and lost a bunch of money and went back to the 2720 which I still have. I've been looking for a Nuvi that has the important features I like in the 2720 but haven't seen one yet. But these having the user vertical data box's is a start. Next I'd like is to turn off AutoZoom. But the big one is a hand held remote. I would miss that.

Presently owned Dezl 760LMT Montana 600 2460lmt 1490T SP2610 SP2720 GPSMAP 276C GPSMAP 60CS NorthStar 951XD in the boat since 1996.
Previous owned Garmin 48,76cs,210. Nuvi 880,1490T.

Your 880 had the ability to turn off autozoom. So does the 805 series and the Nuvi 5000. Handheld remote? Not likely IMO. I liked that on my 2620 as well, but can't say I really miss it. My TomTom 920 included a remote but it really wasn't useful. Not very many functions and it used bluetooth which took awhile to "bond" with the GPS.

One thing I didn't like about the 880 was it didn't track as well as the 2610 or 20 it seemed. I would miss streets, turns because of the lag in updateing position on map. I've read here some of the processors in other Nuvis are faster then 880's? I hope these 1300 or 1400's track like the 2720 does. That with the Vertical Data box's might make me buy one to try.
But wait back to the drawing board.I just realized they don't have MCX antenna connectors now which I like because of my campers aluminum over the cab bed. It blocks lot's of satelites. I usually use an external mounted antenna on top of the camper. I hope my 2720 keeps going for a while.

Captcaper, really fast, even with maximum details.
some issues are noticed, but it is still beta, so i hope will be corrected.
gps chipset is damned fast and really sensitive. :)
autozoom is not so annoying - it is very nice and smooth. I liked 2d pedestrian mode and 'my place' button to fast return.

interface is changed a bit, more comfortable to back to pages, dissapeared some useless OK confirmations.

With the overhead camper at complex intersections, etc. These new chipsets might keep you locked on a road but I thought even though they still recieve signals the accuracy is way off isn't it? so thus I might be always getting locked on to the next street over, etc.
People claimed to be locked on inside a house but I know the accuracy would be way off. Using bounced signals or satelites not used by older chipsets because they would shut down instead of giving false accuracy signals is good to keep some kind of fix but when used in citys with lock on road feature, etc. would produce some interesting results wouldn't it? I know an external antenna would help 10 fold for this situation.

I don't see the option of having the vertical data box's on the map screen which they advertised. I won't buy it if it doesn't

That is odd. The manual doesn't really seem complete, maybe a problem with the "one size fits all" approach. The 1490 is also supposed to support custom routes and the manual doesn't cover that either.
