TESTING - NUVI 12xx, 13xx, 1490 >> CLICK HERE FOR THE FULL ARTICLE<< Link to the nuvi 1200 manual : >> HERE << Software versions : Main/5.10 - GPS/v4.30 - as of 20110309
 From top to bottom : 12xx (3.5" screen), 13xx (4.3" screen), 1490 (5" screen)
Updated July 16th, 2009 : As some had expressed concerns that the 1490 was not as bright as other nuvis like the 760, I did some side by side comparisons on a bright sunny day and posted the pictures on page 10.
Updated 07/2009 : The new nuvi 1xxx GPS systems are now shipping and we have some first user reports from the road, such as Don's first impressions on page 7.
Posted 05/2009 : I had the opportunity to visit the new Garmin France offices in Nanterre just outside Paris to the West and was given a presentation of the new nuvi 1xxx series as well as the Zumo 660 (see separate topic). Unlike the 2xx series that was an entry-level 3xx/6xx when it came out and a bit like the 2x5 that predated the 7x5, the 1xxx has an identity of its own and introduces some new features not found on other nuvi models...Garmin's "feature peppering" at play some will complain...
Let's see what we have here : 1. New form factor : slim is in New interface supposed to be easier to grasp for the user, can't say the nuvi interface as we know it since the 350 came out in late 2005 felt complex, but the tweaks are there. 3. Customizable map display mode, standard (two info fields) or vertical (four info fields). The info fields are customizable as opposed to none on most of the nuvis, and the right one only on the 7x5. 4. CityXplorer Mode : this is a major change in direction making good use of the new CityXplorer Maps based on Navteq's DiscoverCities maps with reach "pedestrian" attributes : paths, transit systems.
Now let's take a closer look with pictures and comments :

 Nuvi 1490T with 5" Screen
Updated 20090416 : Garmin have just announced the arrival of the nuvi 1490T the big brother of the new 1xxx family with a 5" screen, the biggest on a "standard" nuvi so far (the nuvi 5000 has a 5.2" screen, is large and heavy and doesn't have a battery).
[b]Posted 20090303 : From garmin.blogs.comquote: Now more than ever, it's true that the PND is no longer just for your car! Portable, lightweight and ultra-thin, the new nüvi 1200 and 1300 series units announced at CeBIT in Hanover, Germany, feature an enhanced pedestrian mode and premium automotive features that make them ideal for navigation on foot around the city and in the car. On the road, enjoy popular features like text to speech, lane assist, which highlights the preferred lane for navigation, Bluetooth hands-free calling, and free lifetime traffic alerts from NAVTEQ traffic. The nüvi 1390T even features junction view, which allows drivers to see realistic images of upcoming junctions. Exploring an unfamiliar city? Take nüvi with you! The 1200 and 1300 models also feature a public transit mode enabled through Garmin's new CityXplorer, an optional download that provides location and destination information for select tourist destinations in North America and Europe. CityXplorer allows the user to see bus, train and/or metro train route options and times, as well as the distances associated with them. Exploring the city has never been so easy! This new family of prouducts and CityXplorer data are expected to be available in the second quarter - just in time for the the summer travel season! In the meantime, stay tuned to the blog for all the updates and details.

| Interesting that the 3d Buildings view seems to have been dropped or has it? The 1200 series seems to be a replacement for the 2x0, 2x5 standard screen and the 1300 series for the same models for widescreen rather than the 7x0 and 7x5 series. Lack of FM, no MP3 functionality and the micro Sd slot would also seem to confirm similarity with the 2xx series. |

| I don't think the "3d view has been dropped", but it doesn't have 3d buildings like the 7x5 series. Yes, they do have card slots, but so does the lowly Nuvi 205 so that's not much of a factor. No custom routing like the 500, 700, 800 or 5000 series though. |

Should make the folks that want just a GPS happy, I guess:
MP3 player: no Audio book player: no FM transmitter: no Headphone jack/audio line-out: no Remote control: no |

3D building view: no Auto sort multiple destinations: no Garmin Locate™ (marks position when removed from windshield mount): no Routes: 0 (765: 10)
This GPS is not for me (no mp3, no FM transmitter)
Why not make a high end GPS that I would like instead of a long line of low end GPS. |

I don't want one of these either, because I really like being able to plan routes and I'm happy with my 760.
But Garmin appears to be making a smart move (other than the inevitable model lineup confusion) by competing on price at a time when the economy is in trouble. They probably figure (correctly, IMHO) that they can snag three newbie customers to the one who wants a high end unit. And that one is likely going to sit on his money for now, even if a new gee-whiz model came out.

| I think we are about to hear of more new models other than 1200 and 1300. Knowing Garmin they will add most, if not all, of the missing items into these other, more expensive, offerings. |

I will hold my purchase for a new high end GPS. As Dan write, I am happy with my 760.
If the GPS is good enough I have no trouble spending $800 on a GPS.
What I do need to replace my 760. MP3 BlueTooth FM Tranmitter Show POI at all zoom level. Good rooting (multiple point) (+ other GPS stuff)
Would like to have an easy way to enter custom avoidance. (Like you can do with MapSource)

| Wonder how well that CityXplorer feature is going to work, GPS is naturally inaccurate in dense urban areas and this is made worse by the tiny antennas used on the current systems. Last summmer in London I used the 2x5 with GPS off most of the time as it was easy enough to spot my location by looking at the street signs and then using the 2x5 as a (very useful) electronic map. |
