I noticed the other day that you can connect a 760 Nuvi, ( probably others too) to your PC as a GPS device, instead of as a mass storage device. Note this is different from when you normally connect a Nuvi 760 to your PC. Normally a Nuvi 760 will be seen as a mass storage device, whereby you have access to files on the internal and external flash storage. However with this method the Nuvi 760 connects as a GPS device, which hopefully can be used by appropriate PC, GPS software to collect GPS signals etc.
I am new to portable GPS's so I am unaware of what software can take USE this, but surely there must be some software out there that can take advantage of this.
I did not find any info on this undocumented feature here so I thought I would share this info.
First, Turn on the Nuvi then on main page hold the battery icon for a few seconds to get into the information/test menu.
Now connect your Nuvi to your windows PC with its mini USB cable. You will then see the following screen
Click no not this time, so that windows wont search windows update. Then you will get this screen:
Select install software automatically, and windows finds the appropriate "Garmin USB GPS" driver:
Once the driver is installed you get the following screen:
Then when you check device manager you will now see that you have a Garmin USB GPS device attached to your PC.
Upon checking the driver properties I noticed that I now have the following 2.2.1.0 version of Garmin USB GPS driver installed.
So there you go, you now have the nuvi connected to your PC as a USB GPS device. How you can make use of it, I have not figured out yet. However I plan on searching online when I get a chance. In the meantime if anyone knows how to use this feel free to share.

Interesting, but of little use as far as I can see. I believe MS Streets and Trips has an option to interface a GPS, but then if you can do this, you just end up with a bigger screen than the Nuvi. Might make a nice play toy for the copilot on a Land Cruiser motor home.
Regardless, interest find. |

This would be huge, if it really means that the nuvi can send NMEA data through the USB port. But my aging eyes can't read those screens and I am pretty skeptical that it can transmit this data (which is the only way any 3rd party software can use it).
If one of those screens allows you to select what type of data -- it would say something like NMEA or Garmin Host Mode, for example -- then I'd be very excited because it would indeed allow use of a bigger screen, but also introduce some interesting routing and trip planning possibilities.

Oops sorry guys, those images were supposed to allow you to click on them and then open up on another page in full view. I will re-upload the images maybe later on tonight or tomorrow as I am a little to busy at work today to fix this right now. Sorry about the screw up. |

| If you could get it to work with googlemaps, you could possibly get a hybrid view of the streets. |

I noticed this a while back (I tried it, because I knew that the StreetPilot C5xx does it too). There's a difference though - Garmin's NRoute will talk to the StreetPilot in this mode, but not the Nüvi 760.
However, gpsbabel will talk to it.
(I think I read somewhere that at least some of the Nüvi 2xx series does this as well) |

Phil,
But is gpsbabel reading NMEA real-time position data?

realtime data yes - NMEA no (at least, I think not). I believe it's Garmin own, so you need either something that understands it natively, or a translator like Franson's GPSGate.
quick example of o/p :-
C:\>gpsbabel -i garmin -f usb: -o csv -F con: 54.28174, -1.34078, 54.42810, -1.18685, 54.48533, -1.50632, 54.38531, -1.36209, 54.60016, -1.76685, 54.23440, -0.41666,
(then it stops)
or
C:\>gpsbabel -T -i garmin -f usb: -o csv -F con 55.43818, -3.18669, Position 55.43818, -3.18668, Position 55.43818, -3.18668, Position
(continues until interrupted) |

That is pretty sweet. Many 3rd party apps can read Garmin Host Mode, for example, which is at least a likely format for these devices to use.

No luck with a nuvi 680 or 350. But trying it reminded me to fire up GPSy for Mac OS X. Among the choices for input are Garmin Host Mode and translation filters, so this might work with an enabled nuvi model and allow use of all kinds of different maps.

I tried it with the Nüvi 310 in "Pre-boot" mode - but it just gives
00.00000, 00.00000, Position
(repeatedly)

Following 'interested' introduction, I was able to get nuvi 760 tracking with USB interface. These are steps: 1. Put it into diagnostig mode ( holding battery icon for ~ 10 sec) 2. Plug USB cable. Windows will install new driver (only first time as shown in initial post) 3. Exit from diagnostic screen pressing Exit icon (Unit will go through soft reboot) 4. Open tacking software (I'm using TrackMaker; http://www.gpstm.com and following are steps in this software) 5. From menu choose GPS\Garmin Interface and make sure USB is checked. There are 2 diferent drivers installed in the system, Make sure you choose 'nuvi 7 series Software Version 3.10' 6. Click Garmin PVT Data
that's it Enjoy |

There is a interesting website I found a while back that has many tricks and tips for Nuvi owners. It was originally created for the Nuvi 650 but now has user inputted tricks from 2xx and 7xx owners.
In particular there is a section on how to get a 750 to operate as a GPS while attached to a PC that works very well. Have a look at http://home.comcast.net/~ghayman3/garmin.gps/page4.htm#page4text and scroll down to the section called "CHARGE 2!". This method is very fast and requires no addtional software or drivers to be installed on your PC.
For those of you that are interested this site has many many tips and tricks for operating your Nuvi and working with POI's. It's a pretty good resource all in all. |

I was able to get this working on my Nuvi 200 (SW 4.40, Media Tek GPS chip) using TrackMaker. It can even show the EPE (Estimated Position Error) and your position on Google Earth. I haven't found a way to get it to show satellite reception ststus though.
The "NEMA" data is far more "lively" than what the Nuvi shows on its' map screen with the heading bouncing around and small position excursions.
