I've just successfully done that on my unit by using GPSbabel; I am using MacOsX, but I am sure under Windows or Linux things would work the same. Here are the steps:
1- select the waypoint or waypoints on GE. Remember that the BGT-31 has only 6 characters for waypoint names, and the names get chopped after the 6th char. Did not try to see what happens with waypoint with similar names
2- "Save As KML" the waypoint from GE
3- run GPSbabel and use the KML file you just created as input, and the BGT-31 unit as output. The input file will be recognized as Waypoints and the checkmark will appear automatically
4- execute the conversion and GPSbabel will convert and load the data on your BGT-31.
If you don't already use GPSbabel, shame on you!
You can download it from here:
http://www.gpsbabel.org/download.html
I am using the latest 1.3.7 beta without problems.
Ciao, Luca

Hi,
Has anyone tried to use navilink on Windows 7? While uploading logged tracks on XP works I can't get it to work on a Windows 7 system. The USB port I get to see in the Device Manager is a Prolific USB-to-serial comm port (com5). However when I try to connect from Navilink I get an error message that connecting failed (Device not in Navilink mode or wrong port selected). COM5 is the only port that can be selected from the drop-down selection list.
I did a bit of googling but did not find a solution (yet).
Regards, Bart |

Hi,
I have been in contact with the support people of Genie and they suggested to install the driver that came with the package. I did so but it did not solve the problem. What is strange however is that there is a SW package on the CD that captures the data coming from GT31 and displays it on the screen. I was able to see how many satelites it was able to see and raw data was coming in so I think that the connection is OK. I have given that feedback but till now I have not had any feedback from them. I have to be honest that I have not been chasing this since I have other ways to deal with the problem such as using another system at home running XP or copying the card's contents to a portable hard-drive the upload the files and finally convert the files using the provided SW. A bit of a clumsy workaround but it works. I will go to them again if my only system will be a Windows7 system. |

| Thanks, I am using Window7 under virtualization on the MAC. I have XP on an old PC. I guess support is a big problem with a company like this. |

Is the [ B]GT-31 loud?
I was considering one for various uses, including using it as a railway alarm clock, to wake me up when the train reaches the stop before the one I must get off, so I can prepare... |

| According to me it is not that loud. It can give a beep but when used in a train I am not sure it will go above that level (at least that is what I think). |

Just back from a two week trip to Cuba -- my first long trip with the GT31. Two issues:
1. Had one lock up. Had to wait for the battery to run down before it would play again. Any way of doing a reset? (This is with the latest firmware, which I upgraded just before the trip. Should I downgrade?)
2. I tried using it for the first time in SBN mode. Big mistake I think? Navilink will only translate one file at a time, and both it, and gpsbabel (beta), chocked on a few (small) files. I've set it back to NMEA mode for the moment. Is there a better solution?
And I'm still having a problem with the recorded location jumping all over the place when I'm (or at least it's) stationary for a long time. Inherent limitation of GPS? Or will switching it out of low power mode help?

Ian,my recording also jumps around considerably when the unit is stationary.
Does anyone know how to save the current firmware before upgrading to the latest version? |

| Just to clarify, I don't mean the 15m/95% (or thereabouts) that is expected, I mean jumps of 100~200 meters. |

Those jumps you mention about are a huge problem of the BGT-31. This happens especially when I am in downtown areas. In those circumstances the logger is useless and I take note of the location mentally (or with a pen) to find the location later using Geosetter. I would be glad to know if there is way to get rid of that bad problem without compromising the sensitivity of the logger.
I have already posted a message for this behavior and GraemeG kindly answered it. http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=112357&whichpage=7

I too have jumps of 200+ meters, especially in downtown areas (such as Bangkok or Singapore) however it also can occasionally happen in open areas when stationary. I dont know if changing any setting would help. I have logging set to "on fix" and interval set to 5 sec. Would changing the interval to say 1 sec be beneficial but I dont want to get the log files too large.
I am still looking for a way to save the firmware before upgrading. Will upgrading the firmware assist with the logging ? Judging from Ian's post I dont think so. |

| I have already tried to change from 5 seconds to 1 second but without success. I wander if other brand loggers behave similarly. |
