Just recently purchased the Garmin Bluecharts Americas because I do a lot of recreational boating. I have a Garmin Nuvi 250.

I've selected the region and sent it to my device on the SD card, the map loaded properly on the n250 according to the map info. Now, here's the problem, you can only see the depths and water lines on high zoom, when you zoom in, the depths and water lines dissappear, is this normal?

If I'm actually navigating, it's usually zoomed in and if these depths/water lines are not visible, it's pretty much useless wouldn't it?

I haven't had a chance to test it on the waters, wonder if these will actually appear once I'm navigating. Has anyone used this software with the Nuvi25x's? if so, what is your experience with it.

Thanks in advance.

The depths display on handheld and marine Garmin GPS correctly; but not on the Nuvi's. You can tap the edge of the depth lines to see the depths. It will not appear when your on water.

Yeah, and that's pretty expensive mistake since you would have to pay for an additional unlock code to put them on a different unit.

I'm not worried about the price, I got them both at pretty good prices so it's not a big deal. Just thought it would be nice to use the one unit instead of getting 2. Thx for the input guys, oh well, guess I'll look into grabbing a 276. Would of been nice if Garmin just made all their units able to use both marine and road maps.

One nice thing about Blue Chart is you still get two unlock codes, so you won't be out any more money to unlock the same region for whatever marine unit you end up with. I have some Blue Charts on my Zumo, just because it didn't cost extra.

Guys. I found a way to display Blue chart maps on my Nuvi 250.
Rigth now, it's either marine or Car, not both, and you need to plug in PC to do the switch.

First I suggest you back up al;l the content of the Garmin folder once pplugged in.
GmapProm.img is the original file, city
GmapSupp.img would be the extra maps you uploaded, like blueChart, but normally for other regions , like europe.

You require Blue chart, NtV9 europe if you own america, or ntv9America if you own Europe Gps.

See where I am going? stick with me a minute.

I tried to put my bluechart map in the GPS along with the original ntv9 america, would load ok (once unlocked), but does not show.

I tried renaming the original gmapProm.img to something else, and rename the gmapSupp.img to gmapProm.img, make the GPS think that my Bluechart map is the main one.
The GPS would thensay no map with routing capability found, they are required for this unit to work.

So, I installed the Europe version, uploaded the France Map to gmapSupp.img, renamed to gmapProm.img, and rename the blueChartmap to gmapsupp.img and wham. The blueChartmap displays like a charm, since both maps are not of the same region, and at least one of them is a route map.

My ultimate goal, and it is uploading as I write this post, is to have 3 maps in there, that I can put or remove the checkmark next to them. That way, I could have either marine or city without having to use the PC to rename the files.

anyone know How I could have 3 maps? I only have GmapProm and GmapSupp is there another way to put a map with another name?

If you go in Parameters, map, info map, you can see the checkmark next to 2 maps, I would like to see 3.

Dont contact me for info on unlocking files please.

Also, some of you interested, I created a text interface where the Keyboard is QUERTY instead of ABCDE, works fine on my nuvi 250 W, not sure it would fit the smaller unit.

I don't think the problem was displaying BlueChart maps on the Nuvi but displaying depth info and buoy colors.

The 700 seriel Nuvi's display the Blutchart depths and colors correctly. I assume the new Nuvi 255 do as well.

On my Nuvi 250W, blueChart maps show up complete, with depths and buoys at all zoom levels.
The secret is to put a route map that is from another region of where you want to navigate. The GPS then has no choice but show you the Bluechart map.

Anyone interested? I can put up my step by step, but I still have to plug to PC to switch from Route to Marine

I can't find the original reference, but I believe you can have multiple map files with different names that you can select on the Map Info screen, but there's a trick to it and I can't recall how to do it. If I do remember, I'll come back and edit this post.

danham that was helpful.
Although not all of it applicable to Nuvi 250 I was able to find a working solution.
So here it is, Step-By-STEP
How to have City Navigator North America NT OR BlueChart of the same region selectable in your NUVI 250.
First, your need MapSource
Then, you need City Navigator Europe NT and BlueChart maps (assuming you have pre-installed North America internally on your Nuvi).
All the maps transferred to the device will have to be unlocked.
Again, I suggest you backup you Nuvi to your hard drive. I almost boobooed.
So, plug in you Nuvi using USB, and use windows explorer to see the Garmin folder.
The file named GmapProm.img, rename it to GmapProm1.img, and do the same with .SUM file.
Use mapsource, select the Europe map system, Click on any small map, like France, Nice, near Corsa Island. Whatever.
Upload this using the TRANSFER TO DEVICE menu.
This will create a file called GmapSupp.img, rename it to GmapProm.img. This will now become your main basemap, even if you never use it, that's the idea.
Then, do the same will all the marine maps you want to use: in mapsource, select all the maps you whish, or the maps you paid for ;) and transfer the mapset to the unit.
Again, the file created will be MapSupp.img. Leave this one as is.

Now for useage:
You now should have 3 map files
GmapProm.img (Europe)
GmapProm1.img (North America)
GmapSupp.img (BlueChart)

Unplug GPS from PC
Go in Parameters, Map- Info - and select one of the 2 you would like to use... City North America Nt or Bluechart (Europe being active all the time)

All zoom level displayed correctly, even in 3D mode
All depth displayed correctly as well, in topView display only.

Ok, I can see the problem with depths.
They don;t show up when navigating, only when the display is in "show map " mode, ie, when you slide your finger on it to scroll it. Otherwise, depth info are invisible.
But buoy colors are present on some of the maps, I supposed it depends on how they were entered in bluechart.
Sorry for the mislead.

have you tested it? do you have any knowledge what general-use/auto Garmin units have the ability to handle marine charts properly? anyone?

Garmin has wit purpose removed depth info on all GPS that is not mad for the sea.
The only way to see it to press the map and move it some. This way you will soon drive off the map and have to move the map to keep track of your boat. As soon as you exit panning mode depth are gone.

I will add some screen shot later.

Anyway Garmin has obsoleted standard BlueChart, so you have to get the BlueChart G2 (available only on SD cards)
This may work on Nüvi.
(Can be tested using the "DEMO" key option)

Previously owned : GPS "eTrex Yellow" "GPSmap 76S" "GPSMap 60CS" "GPSMAP 60CSx" "Nüvi 660"
Unit I have now :"Nüvi 760 EU" "Nüvi 765" "Edge 305" "Colorado 300"

so the "news" about 700 series or 255 is bogus?

Edit: "I got a confirmation from Garmin that Nüvi would not show depth using Bluechart. Its pr design. "

by you jotne in this thread http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=69180&whichpage=4

hope is fading...
any additional details?

Just looked at your GPS info and I can see that you own 760... some guys believe 7xx is good for bluecharts, I assume they don't work on your unit as well, correct?

What is the maximum that you can zoom in when using the bluechart maps? Can you zoom in closer than you can with the street maps? I would be using the unit for bottom fishing and can't zoom in nearly far enough with the street maps to accomplish this.
