TESTING - GLOBALSAT GH-625 GPS WATCH
SiRFstarIII, Mouse GPS, IPX7 - 60,000 Points, 100 waypoints, 600 Laps, Custom Screens

What you get in the box of the GH-625m version

Product page on the Globalsat HQ site : >> LINK <<
Product page on the Globalsat USA site : >> LINK <<

Globalsat's third generation GH-625 GPS watch has come in for testing and the saying "third time a charm" seems to apply! The new design and form factor now make for quite a sleek device that remains a bit large to be worn as an "ordinary" watch like the Garmin Forerunner 405 but still houses a large screen capable of displaying a track on the map page. The user interface has been enhanced too, particularly with the 4 custom pages that can host up to 4 fields. Also, laps that were missing on the the GH-615 are now available. Let's take a picture tour of this new GPS watch :

A PICTURE REVIEW

Nice packaging, plastified quick start guide, bike mount

Compared to the GH-601 and GH-615

Similar size to GH-615 but sleeker, larger than the FR405 but a wider screen to show the track

The Main Screen

Cycling through the screens - Laps now available

A very interesting feature, four pages of custom screens...

...accessible via these menus

The 625 has a "map" screen unlike the FR405

Activating the "map mode"

Two logging modes and memory/time available

Various menus and info screens

Couldn't resist showing that picture of the 625 in actions !

OTHER COMMENTS
- Battery life came in at a respectable 10.5 hours in continuous use, logging data every one second. It also gives a useful warning at 9.5 hours so you should have enough time to finish off what you were doing. Oftentimes the warning on a GPS comes 5 minutes before it blanks out!

- As is fit on a sports watch designed for use on foot, Globalsat have deactivated the SN (Static Navigation) mode designed to freeze the random movements of high-sensititivy GPS systems when standing still. Only problem with that is you'll see the speed varying between 1/5 kph even when you're not moving and the trip distance building up. This is likely going to be confusing to beginners.

- The GH-625 can almost be worn as a "normal" watch, but unlike the Garmin FR405, it doesn't have a sleep mode that shows the time and date so if you want to have tha rather useful information for a watch you'll need to wade through the menus and turn off the GPS Module, even then you won't get anywhere near the 15 day battery life of the FR-405, some informal testing gave me about 24 hours, will retest to make sure.

Questions, comments?

Posted 200804 : After the GH-601, their first GPS watch in 2006, that had an excellent battery life (18+ hours) but came short in a few areas (form factor, limited memory, slow interface), the GH-615 in 2007 that had an improved form factor, more memory, but shorter battery life, here comes the GH-625 that was first shown at CeBIT. Little is known about it at this point Manual now available on the Globalsat site : >> LINK <<, but it obviously has a redesigned casing that seems to give it the same size as the 615 as seen below.

Useful links :

Tentative price appears to be set at $250

Based on the images in the manual, the interface looks almost identical to that of the GH615.
The good news is, that there seens to be lap support. Wondering if that will be added to the GH615 as well ...

Thanks for sharing, adding the lap feature would certainly be useful. I'm going to read the manual...

...took a quick read and noted some interesting points :

- they use SiRFstarIII LPx chipset, lowest power version AFAIK

- battery is 750mAh for B series and 625mAh for M series (heartrate), larger than on 615 I believe

- battery life is rated between 10 and 28 hours for the B series, not sure what HBM stands for though, Heart, Barometer, Monitor ? But why do they give that info for the B series that don't have these sensors? It would have been interesting to get the battery life with GPS ON/HBMOFF/BL ON, but 28 hours with GPSON/HBMOFF/BLOFF is really good. Wonder what the battery life with GPS off is, on the Garmin 405 it's 15 days, which makes it usable as a "normal" watch

- it comes with a bike holder

I was anxious to begin using the device, however when it came to the so called "users manual" I was very disappointed. There are 60 pages of how to set and use the various features, but not one page devoted to actually "using" the device. I want a tutorial, which begins something like " OK, so you want to go for a bike ride. Step 1."... What the heck do I do after I strap it on my wrist and turn it on?

That fold-out is pretty instructive IMHO? Best bet is to poke around the menus and if you get stuck refer to that page showing all the menus, feel free to pipe in with any questions and we'll try to help.

Hello. I was just wondering if anyone knows if this GlobalSat GPS is for sale somewhere in Australia.
For those who have tested its software: Does it allow to revisit your weekly/monthly/etc mileage?
Is it possible to review Heart Rate data along a period of time or to compare data (speed and distance, heart rate) between different training sessions?
Has anyone conducted a test Run between this one and Garmin?

Thanks, Carlos

Can't remember, if it's possible it would be via the software on the CD.

yes, the original software (http://www.globalsat.com.tw/eng/product_detail2_00000117.htm) allows you to do this, as well as my replacement software (http://code.google.com/p/gh615/)

Hi,
I have just started to use GH-625M. I have read the User guide thoroughly, nevertheless it's not so easy to use the device in real life. So I have some questions I hope someone will kindly answer me.
1. If I create a New Route do I have to input manually new Waypoints while doing my ride, or is the tracking done automatically? It's very unhandy to input new Waypoints manually because I have to stop the ride, do "Save a Waypoint", edit Waypoint's name not to forget it(again unhandy)and then add this new saved Waypoint in my route.
2. The saved Waypoint naming is unhandy on the road. So I left it unnamed, just as "004". I tried to rename it later, but it appears that it can be done only by the Training Gym soft, right?
So sorry- quite a lot of guestions.:)
Thanks for every possible cues! I know things may be done by the software, but at first I'm interesting to master the GH-625.

Continued : OK. I have found the answers to some questions. In fact I downloaded and read the manual for the same device under Canyon brand. Some of the functions are better described in this manual. As I understand now tracking is done only when one starts the timer. Creating a New Route alone with saving the Start and end Waypoints, but without starting the timer won't make any tracking. It will only give the start and end waypoints as cues.

Yes you need to do a "Reset Training Data and Save", this will separate your recordings. As for waypoints, no this is separate from the tracks and on a small device like this it can't be very convenient.

PS - edit your message if it's the last one and less than 24 hours old, makes the forums easier to read, I'll fix it for you.

Thank you for the cues. As you see I edited my last post. I removed the questions I found answers, as well as you answered. The questions I left are just to be sure I'm not missed.
Does anyone know if GH-625M works with MS Autoroute 2007? I connected the device but Autoroute did not detect it at the proven COM port.

Hello!
I think I have made some progress in mastering the device. There is some benefit in the undescriptivness of the User's guide, because that made me to get out of apartments and walk for a short trip.:) Well now I understand most of the features. Don't blame me- this is the first GPS device I've ever used. Well but there still remain some screens I'm not sure I understand clearly. One of them is "Goto Waypoint" screen. The large arrow in the upper right side clearly shows the direction to the Waypoint.
1. Bot what (direction) does show the dashed line from the center of the screen. Sometimes it is lined differently than the large arrow direction.
2. What does the small triangle at the centre at the beginning of the dashed line show? It is rotating from time to time.
3. What does the icon with letter "N" and a small arrow above it mean in the upper left corner of the screen? Is it meant "North" or "Navigation Page"? If it's "North" should I aim the small arrow to the North direction? I guess not.:)
Does anyone know if the device is compliant with the NMEA 2.0 standart to be used as a GPS Receiver in MS Autoroute? Can it be used as a GPS Receiver at all?
Thanks to everyone for possible help!
