The V7 Nav720 as far as I can tell is almost identical to the Nav730 except in 3 aspects.
1. Bluetooth capability
2. Maps and software are NOT on an SD chip
3. Slightly bigger screen. (480x272)

The process is nearly identical to unlocking the Nav730, except that I have found no addons.txt. So, plug your Nav720 into PC (even Vista). You will get a drive labelled "TFAT" This is your Flash ROM that holds your iGo software, games, and some paths.

The important file is IGOPATH.TXT. Make a copy of this file onto your PC or an SD card or any other location. Open up the file, you can just double-click it and use notepad. Add the following line in the [modules] section. Your placement here is where it shows up on your screen, but reversed.

Explorer = "icons/files.bmp", "\\Windows\\explorer.exe"

I placed mine at the very top under [modules] this places it in the bottom right hand corner of my Nav720.

Click on it once, you get a windows 95 type start menu. After that, if you click on it again, you will get windows explorer.

I haven't tried to add POI's or anything like that using this hack, but I have been able to add some .cab based files for WinCE.

To add the files, put them on an SD chip or on your TFAT drive. In explorer (on the Nav720) just click on the filename and it installs. It is important to know that if you reset your device (switch on the right side) you will lose any changes made to the windows registry as well as any files added to the windows folder. I also recommend installing everything to an SD chip or to My Flash Disk. Once the installation ends, the .cab file will automatically removed.

I have tried to install several games and programs. TRE installed fine and works good to modify the windows registry. I also installed a simple TXT editor that will open almost any type of file and it works fine. ArvaleII trial version would not run, and I noticed that there were two files in the Arvale folder that were not in the ArvaleII folder. These two files were AYGSHELL.DLL and GX.DLL I am not sure what these files are for, but they did help somehow when I copied them to the ArvaleII folder, and got me further along with ArvaleII Trial Version, but I never could get it to run. These same two files are in all of the games folders, and I wonder if they are required to run games on this device.

I also got an Ambicom SDIO wireless B adapter to install and partially work, but without Internet Explorer and some other configuration capabilities, I never got it to successfully connect to my wireless network. I was sure I was close. I will work with that some more when I get the chance.

Wow oneofmany57,

this is what i was looking for. I tried putting the "Explorer" line at the end of [modules" but nothing happened, so i thought of returning it. But i think i will try ur solution: put it as the first line in [modules].

my only issue is that i do not see any POIs. Do u see nearby poi's while u r navigating? also my gps reception is very poor. i dont know its because i am in pittsburgh, pennsylvania : totally hilly area and always cloudy, rainy.

On the back of the device is a small hole that says "Reset". Poke a paperclip up in there and the device will reboot and keep your settings.

When I am driving I do see my POI's. There is a trick to it. Never use the switch on the side of the device to turn off your unit. When you use the switch on the right side, it disconnects the battery and resets everything to factory state.

To see POI's while driving, go into V7 Navigation. Tap on Menu, then Settings. Then tap on Manage POI. The POI icons have a little circle to the right. If it has a check mark it will show those POI's on the map while you drive. To add a check mark, tap once on the icon you want to show (ex - Services) and you will see a red outline come up. Then click the "hide" button at the bottom, it turns into "Show". Then click on the "Show" button. The check mark should appear for all of the poi's in that category.

Added: I usually have around 11 Satellites showing green. I live in a very flat area with few obstructions other than buildings. I have noticed if I go into a metal roofed building or a building with steel supports, I will LOSE my signal completely. In my house -all wood- I keep a good signal as long as I stay away from electric devices like my PC or TV or microwave. Also flourescent lights kill my signal too.

Back to the Hacking:
I've completely wiped out my Nav720 so that I can do this walk through. The only thing I have extra besides the hack in the first post is TRE. It is necessary to do the explorer hack to continue with these hacks.

Hack #1: Install a registry editor.
TRE is a registry editor from TascalSoft for the PocketPC. You can download the zip file here: http://www2r.biglobe.ne.jp/~tascal/download/pocketpc/tre_e.htm
After the dowload, extract all the files from the zip. Plug your Nav720 to your PC and copy the "TRE.arm.CAB" file to your Nav720. Unplug your 720 and using explorer, find the "TRE.arm.CAB" file and then double click (double tap) on the file. This will execute the installer. You can change where to install. I recommend "My Flash Disk" in a separate folder. I am using a folder called "tre".
Now, you need to back up your registry. Start TRE by exploring to "My Flash Disk" and then "tre" folder. Double tap on TRE. In TRE, click on "File" then "Export Registry". You can save this anywhere you like and name it anything you like. I recommend saving it to an SDchip, and I named mine "original_backup.reg". Later hacks will describe how to set up your 720 to boot directly to Windows instead of the iGo shell. Those settings will be saved as an exported registry file in case you ever have to hard reset your device.

Hack #2: Add Windows Solitare
This is an easy hack and will work with the iGo shell and the Windows shell. Since the 720 does not come with all of the Windows CE files, we have to get them from somewhere. Microsoft freely distributes a platform builder for Windows CE .net 5, the core software for the 720. Using this builder, I got the files needed to add features to the 720. To get Windows Solitare, download here:addsol.zip
Extract the contents, plug in your 720 to the PC, and copy the two files to your 720's TFAT drive. Unplug, and using explorer on your 720, copy the two files into your "Windows" folder. You can put them anywhere, as long as they are together.

To use in Windows, hold your finger or a small blunt object down on the file "solitare.exe" and a circle will draw up. Then a menu will appear. In the menu, click on "Copy". Then double tap into "Programs" (this should be //windows/programs). Hold down again on a blank area like you did before to get the circle menu. In the menu, click on "Paste Shortcut". You can usually rename the shortcut to what you want. In Windows when you click on Start and Programs, you will now see Solitare and Windows Explorer.

To use in the iGo shell, add this line to your IGOPATH.TXT file under the [GAMES] section (see first post on how to do that).
Windows Solitaire = "icons/solitaire.bmp", "\\windows\\solitare.exe"

Where you place this line is the position it is shown in reverse. Then soft reset your 720. Soft reset is a small hole in the back, poke a paperclip up in there to do a soft reset.

More to Come.....Next: Using Activesync and booting to windows

wow great thread. I looked everywhere for nav720 hacks but I couldnt find them until now. Just ordered from staples and it will be here thursday. Cant wait to try these hacks. Off topic, but how is the bluetooth??? is the built in mic good quality?

and I heard somewhere there was a way to install more gps voices like the tomtom ones... that would be nice. whenever you figure out some new hacks be sure to put em up.
thanks

The bluetooth is good, I haven't had any problems, except when I left my GPS in the car and my cell phone which was in my pocket rang while i was in my house. The external mic seems weak to me. I am in my vehicle quite a bit and I intend to get an external mic that I can mount on my visor or something.

I haven't gotten to the part about installing more voices. I do know that there are more TTS (Text To Speech) voices available somewhere than just the Samantha voice that comes with it. I downloaded them and put them on a Garmin several weeks ago. Without a TTS voice, your unit will not pronounce the names of streets.

Here is my two bit contribution:

1 - Adding

Explorer = "icons/files.bmp", "\\Windows\\explorer.exe"

to the Modules section of igopath.txt does work but you MUST save it either as DOS or ANSI text file. Many editors today save it as Unicode and CE won't read it. All you 'll get is a black screen.

2 - You can format TFAT as FAT32. You will gain about 30MB of space.

3 - You can split maps between TFAT\iGo\maps and "Your SD Card"\iGo\Maps. CE will find all the maps.

4 - POI's are in the map files. iGo.db has only your custom POI's.

5 - Updated software and maps can be found at http://v7support.com/V7GPS/Updates/
You can choose USA, Mexico, and Brazil. You can also choose the standard map size/information, small, and large files the have less and more information respectively.

6 - You don't need the map loading software that comes in the CD. You can copy/paste everything with Windows Explorer.

7 - Bad reception? Get an antena for $10 at eBay. Look for ANY GPS antenna with an MMCX plug.

8 - Yes, you do need a TMC antenna for real time traffic. ANY TMC antenna will work with any GPS. Shop for price, but first check your area to see if the service is available and how much it costs.

9 - It works with 2GB SD's. I don't know if it works with the larger ones.

Enjoy.

Are you sure. As far as I can see, only the Garmin GTM-11 and GTM-12 are out there. everything else seems to be external antennas for otherwise built in recievers.

The Garmin's look like they would work (USB interface) but literature says they are only for Garmin products.

I'd like to hear from someone who has tried TMS hardware on a V7 any model before I put down $130 or more. Dang thing would cost as much as my V730. I hope prices fall later this year as competition moves in.

Its also likely that hardware that works in Europe will not work in the US. Some regions use FM others use HDradio.

Know anyone who bought the Navigon. I hear the TMS radio is in the Car adapter. Might try it on another unit without much trouble.

Although I've heard they exist I never saw a GPS with the traffic tuner built in, and all the antennas I've found have the traffic tuner in them. Easiest thing is to ask techsupport@v7-world.com. They take about a week to respond, but they do respond.

Hi Curtt,

You mentioned in the above post that you can split the maps on TFAT and SD card and cE will read all. how do I do that, please guide. I have NOT yet hacked my unit for the taskbar ? Is it still possible or do i need to hack it first.?? Thanks in advance

You will not see the SD card in Windows Explorer using the GPS, only TFAT. You can see the SD card in the GPS when you use one of the applications like the mp3 player, and you browse through the directories. You need to load the SD card through your computer by using an SD card reader.

You can load any of the three sets of maps they have, i.e. the Basic Small, Basic Regular, and Premium. You can also mix maps from the three sets. If you don't think you will go to Alaska but would like to have a simple road map you can download Alaska from the Basic Small. If you think you will be driving through New York a lot, you can download it from the Premium set so you have more detailed maps and more POI's. TFAT will take up to the Basic Regular. If you intend to use more detailed maps from the Premium version you must use the SD card to split the load.

Download the maps from the web site and put some in the TFAT\iGo\maps and some in the "SD card"\iGo\maps. The GPS will read all of them no matter where they are. As I said, the maps on the TFAT can be deleted or uploaded using Windows Explorer and going to TFAT\iGo\maps. The maps you want to place on the SD card need to be done using an SD adapter.

I hope this helps.

The guide given on v7support site says on SD card just create MAPS folder( no iGo folder). Also I was a bit hesitant to format the TFAT. As I am going on a long trip I do not want to take any risks by formatting. So I will remove all regular east coast maps from TFAT and load premium east coast maps on SD card as I will be in east coast from now on. I will keep current west coast maps in the TFAT as is because I would hardly travel there. I will try it out and let you know. Thanks very much...
