I tried to install your skin on my 314, but the unit gives a "ffui error" at startup - I was able to recover by copying the original data.zip back with cecmd.
Did I do anything wrong?

Hello all,
I've just bought original iPAQ 316 FA977AA#B1Q (Eastern Europe) Polish.
After some playing with it I've decided to upgrade maps etc.
So from hp.com I downloaded sp39121.exe, run it, all process
went well and after a reboot I've got error:
"The application failed to start last time. Do you want to reset
to factory defaults and lose all your POIs, tracks and settings?
Yes / No"
Whatever I choose its booting again and asking exactly the same question.
I repeated upgrade once again (using SD card and CElauncher.exe)
- got the same problem.
Then I've tried Engineering Mode Option 10 - no luck.
I'm really frustrated on it...
Is there something I can try before I go back to HP support ?
Thanks for any hint.

Here are a couple of "case mods", and an idea.
To stop the iPaq powering on when it is in my pocket, I cut a hole in the carrying wallet where the power button is located.
I also wanted to keep my wifi card with the iPaq, but I already have a SDHC memory card, so I cut through the stitching on the right-hand side of the wallet to insert the wifi card. The problem is that it could possibly go in completely and be impossible to get out, so I cut a small line on the front of the wallet, and inserted some glue in-between the two pieces of card. This creates a barrier, preventing the wifi card from going in too far.
There is also a power switch under the rear cover to the left of the battery:
If the cover is removed, the microswitch operates and the power turns off. There could be some way of using this, too. |

Has anyone tried popping open the 3xx case to find out what sort of flash memory it has? I'm wondering if one could upgrade the internal flash to a larger size. Don't you just love this forum! I have managed to make most of the mods with my pre-intel Mac. Haven't figured out a way to do an official upgrade though.

For the 316 you might need sp39849.exe
TITLE: HP iPAQ 316 Travel Companion - Russian (English) Operating System and Map Upgrade
(for my 314 I needed sp39114.exe)
Now I looked at it, the 314 update is over 1.5Gb while the 316 update is only 476Mb. |

You simply download th spxxxx.exe from the HP.com site and execute it on a pc with the iPaq connected. Or you can do it the hard way: install the .exe on a pc, take the DATA\IPAQ folder from the install-directory and place it over the IPAQ folder on the iPaq. |

Are you sure about spXXXXX.exe choice ?
According hp.com :
sp39121.exe (639 MB) 5 May 2008 is for FA977AA#B1Q (Polish, Eastern Europe)
sp39849.exe (476 MB) 5 Jun 2008 is for FA977AA#ACB (Russian)
and I have iPAQ 316 FA977AA#B1Q (Polish, Eastern Europe) with maps for all Eastern Europe.
I downloaded sp39849.exe, extracted on PC and see only maps for Russia.
So I think sp39849.exe is NOT for me.

Sorry, you're right about the Russian version, that's also a 316 so I thought that was yours.
But... To confuse you again:
I also found SP39119.exe for SKUs: FB078AA#1HL and FA977AA#B1Q
(39119 and 39121 are from the same date)

Speaking about all these HP may/june updates, I installed the one for my 314.
First results:
- All EFM mods work better (no more zoom trouble)
- The scheme-mod now works on a 314!!!
- I had to make a slight change to the position of the text in the small speedsign mod I made a couple of days ago.
- The France1.poi file seems corrupt. Its smaller (15Mb) than the previous version 25Mb) AND my 314 crashed when trying to find any address in southern France. Solution for now was to put the old FranceX.poi files back.

I tried sp39119.exe for SKUs: FB078AA#1HL and FA977AA#B1Q - no luck.
The problem is apparently with NAV application - when I set
igoautostart=0 in sys.txt my ipaq 316 starts OK.
And only when I choose Navigation button I'm getting exactly
the same error I mentioned in my first post.
I suspect a kind of flaws in spXXXXX.exe files (I read on HP ITRC forum
there was such cases in the past).
It's time to visit HP support...

I was too wondering if anyone has entered the race for "over-the-limits-mods", meaning the hardware ones.
I think I'm gonna open my device in the coming weeks.
My goals are :
- A protected switch to solve also this issue of un-wanted power on
- Moving the power button to a left of right side instead of top as when I place my iPaq into my OtterBox, the power button is no more usable.
- Adding more push buttons ? to be used with Ozi. Will probably required a lo of things such as finding an available serial link, using a small uC and writing some damn'd WinCE driver (I will probably ask for help when I get there).
I didn't think we will have much change to upgrade the flash as it would probably means changing the base system.
Did not yet looked at the chip datasheet. Apparently Centrality has merged with Sirf....

I have a few more questions (don't we all!). I've made these mods as described on http://www.ebay-pictures.com/gps/: mod 1, mod 2 (EFM), mod 3 and mod 6. I think I followed the instructions to the letter, but for weeks now I've been seeing a "green bar" just below the horizon in 3D mode:
The above shot is looking east over the Pacific Ocean, so there should not be a green bar! Any idea what might be causing it?
Also, is there a way to lose the speaker icon in 3D mode? It interferes with the Zoom in icon with mod 6. Even if you can suggest a file in DATA.ZIP I should look at, that would be good.
Finally, I've been playing with the Pocket VNC server from http://www.pocketvnc.com/index.php. I can get a connection from both a TightVNC and an UltraVNC client, and the mouse and arrow keys work, but there is no text input, i.e. the normal alphanumeric keys don't work. Strangely, I can do Alt-F to bring up the File menu on all the apps, but normal 'f' and 'F' don't work. Could it be a registry setting I need to tweak? Thanks all. |

@DoctorWkt, to remove the volume button, go to the navigatemap_800_480.ui, find the section <layer ui_fmap z=100> and in that section you will find 4 lines starting with:
<SPRITE sprNM_VolStatus ........
<PUSHBUTTON BtnVolumeOnMap ........
<SPRITE IconBrightness ........
<PUSHBUTTON BtnBrightnessOnMap .......
Place a ; in front of the 4 lines. |
