UPDATED 05/22/2006 : Some major updates today for www.POInUSA.com - we'd discussed this in the past and now with 30+ entries in the list, it seemed like a good time to see if we could get organized a bit better.

First is the new category linked from www.POInUSA.com , i.e. http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/default.asp?CAT_ID=20 - it holds several subsections where we can hopefully find a good spot for all the discussions. The section that will be of interest to previous contributors here is the Custom POI "Collections" where each collection can have its own thread for more regular updates and easier posting of additions and corrections by people who download the list. I used groomden's message indicating the upload of the REI Stores as an example of what could be done. People who have made POIs available in the current thread are encouraged to start a thread of their own and help is available if need be.

This is very much work in progress and a common spot for all those interested in sharing custom POIs, so feel free to pipe in with any questions or suggestions on how to get things organized. People willing to moderate/coordinate these new forums are also welcome to drop me an email on gpspassion [@] gmail.com

Here is the news item on the portal : http://www.gpspassion.com/fr/news.asp?id=699

SHARING CUSTOM POIs - www.POInUSA.com
NEW - Speed Cameras in Europe : www.EuropePOI.com

INTRO / 1.AVAILABLE POIs / 2.HOW TO ADD OR CORRECT A POI /
3.HOW TO BUILD AND SHARE A POI DATABASE / 4. USEFUL TOOLS

INTRODUCTION

Note by GpsPasSion : While TomTom has had this feature since their navigation solution were launched in 2002, Garmin recently made their POI Loader (Compatible with C3x0/i3/27x0/7x00/Quest 2, nüvi, 60/76Cx) available and there has been interest more interest in sharing custom POIs via the forums. This type of approach has been very successful in France with www.POIenFrance.com where we now have hundreds of thousands of POIs. The way we did it in France was have people interested in a particular type of POIs (the "POI Cat Manager") sharing their lists and coming up with a list obtained by matching addresses with GPS coordinates for instance. Other people could then download that list and add new POIs in the thread with the "POI Cat Manager" updating his list. We need to make sure we do not publish lists that belong to other people. So let's see what can happen with www.POInUSA.com !

1. AVAILABLE POIs
FOR PERSONAL USE ONLY - DO NOT REDISTRIBUTE OR LINK DIRECTLY TO THE POI FILE

CLICK HERE FOR THE UPDATED INDEX

2. HOW TO ADD A POI

If you have any POIs you want to add to existing databases linked above, just post a message in this thread stating:
- POI Database concerned
- Description
- Latitude (in decimal degrees, DD.dddd)
- Longitude (in decimal degrees, DD.dddd)
The Database "manager" can then add the data and upload a fresh file to the server.

3. HOW TO BUILD AND SHARE A POI DATABASE

  • How to build your own POI Database by njphilwt - > LINK <

  • Uploading your POIs :
You can upload you POIs using this method:
    1. Make a zip of your .csv and .bmp file and call it USERNAME_POICATEGORYNAME.zip (avoid spaces)
    1. Send your zip file here: http://www.gpspassion.com/_safileup1e.asp
    2. File will be in http://www.gpspassion.com/upload2/USERNAME_POICATEGORYNAME.zip
    3. You can link it with this code (remove the blanks)

  • [ url="http://www.gpspassion.com/upload/USERNAME_POICATEGORYNAME.zip" ]POICATEGORY[ /url]
    4. Leave a message here so the admins can update the links.

Note : do not copy POIs available elsewhere, the POIs must be yours, after recording them with your GPS on the spot for instance or placing them on a map based on previous trips.

    4. USEFUL TOOLS

    • POIedit to create POIs or import existing lists, save them to .asc, remove the first 3 lines and then rename to .csv and you're set to import them into the POI Loader, to use them with TomTom save them to .ov2
    • Maps of North America for use with POIedit - >> HERE <<
    • GPStoPOI (beta) by njphilwt - this program converts from GPX format to CSV format or vice versa. You can create waypoints in MapSource and then convert them to POI (CSV) files. You can also convert POI (CSV) files that others have created, and then edit them in MapSource, see link for details

After pulling my hair out for a few weeks, I finally got my unit to show my POIs with the Points of intrest Loader. Now having used it a few days, I'm liking it more and more, this thing can be very powerful. How about post the way you use your POI, or what places/categories you've come up with ... so I can get some ideas from the entire forum when I make some more POIs

    So far I have (3) categories :

    1. Super Walmart stores
    2. Florida
    3. Local stops ...whats yours ?

I think I may have posted this in the wrong thread at first so I'm also posting it here..
Uploaded Speed and Red-Light Cams for the Phoenix Metro area current as of this post. Arizona needed to generate revenue due to the states HUGE budget deficit. So they decided to stick it to the tax payer and installed a bunch of these cameras on the highways.
I'd been looking all over for this data but had no luck finding a current download. So I made one myself.
The data is in 2 convenient formats:
    Garmin CSV
    and
    IGO/MIO CSV,TXT and spud

Enjoy...I will probably be doing one for all of AZ soon.

Some of the stores are newer then my Mapsource so I used Google maps to assist me. I also specified which stores sell gasoline. Hello all:

Using a Geocoding API that is now available from Yahoo!, I have developed a simple program that lets you enter an address, and it will look it up, will get the coordinates, and will automatically run MapSource with a new WayPoint already generated for the location. This makes it very easy to copy the new wayppoint into your off-line favorites file.

You need to be online to run it, but the lookup is so fast and easy, that it makes scoping out new WayPoints much faster than any other method I have used. For example, you can enter:

    350 5th, 10118

    And the program will return:

    350 5TH AVE, NEW YORK, NY, 10118-0110

    40.748434 -73.984791

If you click "OK", it will then open MapSource with a generic waypoint generated for the location. You can show it on the map, look at it in Google Earth, or just copy the waypoint, and paste it into you own master waypoint file. It works great, and it's FAST.

At this point, I'm just looking for feedback as I noted above. If there is enough interest, I will continue working on it.

A script version can be downloaded here:

I do see categories for RLcams, Wawa, and other things I loaded.

They were all in the same directory, did I miss something or do all speed traps go under the 25mph category?

Oddly enough, when I loaded them it asked me the treshold speed to notify me for 25, 30, 35, so all indications were that it was loading properly.

Any idea why they are all categorized as 25mph?

Sorry but as your coordinates are extracted from www.beerme.com it’s not possible to get your file into the index without the agreement of beerme.com.

    Hey Guys -

I am new to this, but just loaded the Starbucks .cvs - just needed toclean up the file and it worked fine.

I have a couple of basic questions:

    1. What is the difference between the new Starbucks locations I just added and what was in the Garmin 2820 be default? Is it now just easier to get to - instead of going through all the menus?

    2. In my neighborhood, there are three speedzones, 35,45 and 50 - all in a single stretch of road. How can I get an alert when I go from one to the next? Is there a way I can inlude my direction of travel so it knows if I am going in to, or out of - the speed zone?

BTW- The 2820 is great -$800 at getfeetwet.com

    Thanks!

Tim Horton - ill fated defenseman for the Toronto Maple Leafs and Buffalo Sabres- died tragically in a car accident near the end of his career- but not before he started a coffee/ donut shop! now they're everywhere in Canada and growing in the US. good stuff!

Tim Horton's?!?!? - I've never heard of it - well, I emailed them to try to get a list of locations in a spreadsheet or some kind of format, but I never heard a response. So I decided to try their poor excuse of a store locator from their website. The problem is that it seems they have problems with their locations. Some searches pull up locations that seem to be just right down the street from each other (within a few blocks). Surely this can't be. If you would like to see what I came up with (2840 distinct longitude/latitude locations - 294 of which are in the U.S.), then I'll send it to you, but I bet it's not complete or accurate. I would think it's mostly complete and accurate and would be a good guide to start with. With that many locations, I would think it would take up quite a bit of memory in the GPS unit. Of course, if you're just going to be in the U.S., then 294 locations aren't too bad.

Well, according to a message at the bottom of page 9, line feeds (carriage returns) shouldn't create problems.

Will try stripping them anyway a little later on, just to see it it helps.
    beer Posted - 23 juin 2006 : 18:43:42
I think the problem is there's Carriage Returns in the file. (Makes the address of the location show just like on an address label)
    Example:
    -86.949656,34.785059,Starbucks,"1286 Hwy 72 East
    Athens, Alabama 35611
    256-230-9298"

    where it should be:
    -86.949656,34.785059,Starbucks,"1286 Hwy 72 East Athens, Alabama 35611 256-230-9298"

    All on one line.

Microsoft Word can strip out carriage returns, I'll give it a shot later today if I get the time to.
    dsegel Posted - 23 juin 2006 : 18:36:41
There are still 6 or 7 entries with no street address, and I think 2 others that had some other problem. I just removed them from the file and loaded it without them.

To quickly find the entries with no address, load the file in Excel (or equivalent) and sort by the address column.

Thanks for the work on this.

    Looking at the Starbucks file in Excel, there's problems on lines 530 and 531, 1005 & 1006, 1344 & 1345, 1538 & 1539, 2017 & 2018, some duplicates at 2731, 3203 & 3411, more problems at 3674-5, more duplicates at 4639+ & 4763+, 4799, 4811, 6468, 7553+, 7870 and probably some duplicates I missed.

I don't think duplicates will cause loading problems but those other lines mentioned surely will.

I haven't tested this fix yet...

Crimson Editor (free) will show line numbers for those who don't have Excel.

Hope this helps anyone that wants to manually clean them up.

I suspect that you could fit all the speedcams in one unit (I have about 16000 POIs and some have reported 22k) on a c320

In terms of managing the lists, it would be better to do it by region, and then users merge what they want.

POIEdit has a good append function, and (my personal favorite) can identify duplicate items within a certain range of each other ... eg 5 metres, 10 metres and easily cut them.

Redcloud, are you going to post a thread for your list?
    redcloud Posted - 08 juin 2006 : 01:07:55
Assuming that all 50 states speedtraps were available, I don't think they would all fit in the unit. So, I figured it would make sense to divide the speed traps by states.
To get the current speed traps into one directory, you need to merge the speed files. This can be done easily with a spreedsheet or cut and pasting the cvs files together.
    admin_0 Posted - 07 juin 2006 : 18:23:08
    Redclout (and others)

First of all, thanks for taking all the trouble to assemble and share your POI information.

Question on installation. According to the Garmin POI loader help file, all csv files are uploaded from a single directory. Each upload overwrites the prior upload. Hoever, some of the files in your various zip files have the same names - hence they would overwrite one another in the sam directory. Am I missing something here? Is there a way to load multiple state POI's together.

    Thanks

UPDATE : Ok, so some major updates today for www.POInUSA.com - we'd discussed this in the past and now with 30+ entries in the list, it seemed like a good time to see if we could get organized a bit better.

Here is the news item on the portal : Here is the news item : http://www.gpspassion.com/fr/news.asp?id=699

@steve495 - unfortunately, we've found that most companies are either uninterested or get "antsy" when approached with that type of request, questions being "who are you and why are you doing that", they don't get the point most of the time, that's fine, gives us more flexibility too ;-)

Hello, Ive experienced trouble when trying to install the Starbucks and Kinko's Poi's onto my Garmin c330. I get an error message stating that there are "errors in the data on line 2 ect ect". All the other Poi's Ive linked to have worked wonderfully and am very grateful to those who took the time to make them available!! Any suggestions as to why these two Poi's might be different and a possible fix?? Thanks Everyone!

Has anyone just tried picking up the phone or sending an e-mail to some of these companies and asking for an Excel file?

I'm trying that approach with Red Robin. I figure that if they can provide a simple spreadsheet with the address of each location, I could post it within a day or so.

I'd also encourage companies to start posting the information for locations on their sites - good marketing idea!

But maybe we're a bit ahead of our time...

Can someone update the Outback Steakhouse POI file in the first post? It included a BUNCH of duplicates. I cleaned them up and added one new location in my area.

As noted above, the TA Truck Stop location information on their site is very inaccurate. In addition, I have reported about my firat contact with the TA people.

They have now made a first attempt to correct the data, but the data is still inaccurate. Here is a quote from my last contact with them:

"Thank you for your input and time you have spent working with me on the latitude and longitude coordinates for our locations. At this time, we will go back to our provider and ask for a full review of the work they have done for us and how they will correct the error."

As I learn of the turn around time to complete this, I will let you know.

I have started my own location database for these locations, but sickness in the family prevent me from completing the work at this time. When I know more, I'll let you know.

You mean make some proposed corrections so the list can be updated as per the suggestions on the first page ? ;-)

    take 'em down then.

The TravelAmerica locations uploaded from "mors" seems to be the data from the TA web site. All of that data is in error by several miles -- note several miles. One location was several miles out in the Alantic ocean.

I have had a phone discussion with a TA repersentative about this issue. She admitted the problem and will try to correct it in two to three weeks.

When, and if, I hear more, I'll advise.

I uploaded the file: GEOFFRION_FAMCAMPS.ZIP which provides location of military RV campgrounds around the country. Should be of help to those who camp there.

This has been noted here, but only the POI author can fix it. Here is what I did: If you have excel, then it's easier to deal with a csv file in my opinion. There are too many commas in a few lines: Note that only 4 columns are allowed on a line

    Open the CSV file
    1. Go to line 1597, the last field should be in the 4th column.
    2. Line 1598 and 1605 are the same way.
    3. Save it back out as a CSV file.

If you don't have excel - you can open this in notepad and do the same thing (just remove the last comma in these 3 lines)

Unfortunately, I seem to be getting the same results with my c340... My primary reason for creating a New York Panera Bread POI list was that most of the franchises seem to have opened after City Navigator V7 was released...

I've also been adding other newly opened local restaurants and stores as POI's, as well as correcting addresses of existing businesses which changed after my area adopted the E-911 emergency system (not necessarily NAVTEQ's fault; these businesses refuse to comply for what ever reason)...

Here is a pretty simple (I hope) question for clarification. I have a C340, if I understand correctly based on my experience with fooling around a little, items in my POI list will only be found when searching inside "My Favorites" and not when searching the main database from say .. the "Food" menu?

Or will custom POI's be included when I search from the "Food" menu? So far it does not appear as if it will and that just seems very inconveinent to have to search two databases.

Also, make sure that there are only 3 columns in the spreadsheet.

POIEdit will use the first 2 for long/lat and then the third for description. All other information is lost.

You may wish to append info you wish to keep into the 3rd column (such as the phone number) using concatenate (or whatever that feature is called) in Excel.

NB Version 4 of POIEdit has the option of using the 4th column, but then the third column info is lost.
    gpspassion Posted - 15 avr. 2006 : 11:35:42
To get the call feature to work in TomTom you need to tack on a @ after the name, i.e. [CA]Campbell@4082497654 so make sure you have a cell that looks like that in your excel spreadsheet. If you get stuck you can send it to me on gpspassion [@] gmail.com

I have an excel spreadsheet of many Radio Shack store locations, I was able to get longitude/latitude from a website, and I saved again as a excel spreadsheet.
I converted it to a tomtom ov2 file using POIEdit and it loses all the info except store #, and longitude/latitude.
How do I keep the information such as telephone # for use with the 'Call Feature' built into tomtom5?

I noticed a few gaps locally in the bulit-in Radio Shack database; I'm working on filling them in now. My POI list of Panera Bread locations in New York State is almost ready, though...

It seems like the built-in POI database has plenty of Radio Shacks. And, since Radio Shack has stopped selling full franchises in the USA, the list has been stable for a while.

Has anyone noticed Radio Shack gaps in the built-in Garmin POI database?
