The Nokia N95 was the first Smartphone with a GPS to be announced by Nokia at the end of 2006, and though it was joined by the 6110 at the 3GSM, the latter is not yet available. Hard to believe it descends from the Nokia 6600 of only 3 years ago with all the latest mobile technologies Nokia crammed in : 3G/3G+, WiFi, Bluetooth, Hi-Resolution screen, 5Mp Camera and...a GPS module that we're more particularly interested in at GpsPasSion.

Hi!
This is my first post here, thanks for this amazing ressource about GPS!
I am planning to go on a trip through Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore and then Australia.
I am seriously considering the N95 as a GPS with moving JPEG as I believe most of these countries have no maps from commercial editors.
Im not talking the 8Gb version (too expensive) but the N95 (brand new though, I will purchase it from a store)
Now the question I have:
I heard a lot (and I mean a lot) about the N95's early models GPS. Apparantly it's working very well now with the A-GPS but this requires a data connection of any sort to function.
I'd like to know about the performance of a N95 GPS _without_ A-GPS... Is it reliable? Reasonably fast to lock? Or should I forget about the Wifi to make SIP calls when near a hotspot and go for a 6210 Navigator?

I think the requirement to use a tiny antenna is going to make it hard to get raw GPS performance on par with GPS systems equipped with a 25x25mm patch antenna. Other tricks will be needed like map matching using the footprint of buildings in dense urban areas for instance.
BTW there is an updated GPS performance comparison on the portal http://www.gpspassion.com/fr/articles.asp?id=175&page=8 with an AGPS enabled N95. As expected this has not improved tracking performance. |

You hit the nail on the head there. I would want to use it on foot, in the car, it's not a big deal to lug around a bigger unit. The display is also bigger. However, I find that my Nuvi likes to fall down when I use the windshield mount as well. When on foot, I have issues with the Etrex in the "concrete jungle" or under trees because it's not SiRF.
As with all technolodgy, eventually, they'll improve the Smartphones, but it looks like the quality isn't up to my standards/expectations just yet. |

Well it's going to depend on your usage pattern, on foot you'll be disappointed compared to your eTrex, too bad because this is where a Smartphone would really be convenient compared to an AIO. For car use gps performance should be ok, but you'll miss the form factor of the 650 I'm sure and the convenience of just dropping it in its mount and heading off! |

The 4 is the 4th version for the N95. It has an 8 GB non upgradable internal memory. I appreciate the info. I was thinking of using the N95 as a replacement for the larger Nuvi 650 that I have, it's a bit of a nuisance to carry around. If the signal level is even less than my Etrex, well...it's a no brainer. |

Does 4 stand for 4 GB of memory ? I hadn't seen any change between the original N95 and the N95 8Gb, I doubt they would have redesigned the chip. The main problem for a smartphone is that it's stuck with using a tiny antenna, generally not much more than a wire so the signal level is much lower than with the 25x25mm patch antenna of say an eTrex. Then the Nokias use a TI chipset that seems to be less powerful than the SiRFstarIII chipset and also much less "road tested" since 2005 on a countless number of GPS systems. |

The N95-4 (newest version) was just released a few weeks ago in Canada. I wonder if anything has changed with the N95 and the GPS chip that's being used. |

Hi David,
You can use the software in the Nokia but for additional services like voice and guidence you have to pay.
I have been told you can use a separate bluetooth transceiver as well.
Some folks have tried add-on software. I suggest another forum site for you to check out, N95users.com
There are folks from all over the world on the forum and you can search for topics like what you are looking for. |

Hi all!
Have just ordered my Nokia N95, will arrive Tuesday.
Question - do I have to use the provided software (not keen on paying to do so) or can I install another like Tom Tom 6 for example?
Anyone have any recomendations as to which software is good?
I want to use UK and Bulgarian maps mainly but other East European countries possibly on the odd ocassion.

I don't want to bother you,but I can't switch on manually the GPS.
I mean I can do it, but when I leave GPS DATA tool to launch J2meMAP GPS switches off automatically.
I haven't maps at the moment,but I don't think this is the problem

Hi
I have just bought the new NokiaN95, but I have some problem to display GPS data. I am using J2meMap, I launched the application but it doesn't switch on the GPS, so no position information.
I saw that you used it to log the track,this is what I want to do is there any special setting on the phone?
