Posted - 25 mai 2006 : 02:22:38 UPDATED BY GPSPASSION - 20060808
Updated 08/08 - After weeks of speculation between those who were enjoying their P550 and those who were struggling to get a fix due to abnormally low signal levels as shown in the June signal analysis, Mio have just announced on their site that about 9% of the P550 they shipped had such problems.
They are asking users to return them for repair and offering a warranty "catch up". One could have hoped that they would offer an immediate swap to make up for the frustration, but it's good to see that they have now identified the problem and that it can be fixed.
Updated 06/20 - Some new developments today, after a flurry of GPS reception problems reported by P550 users in the FRA forums, that were hard to understand given the stellar performance of the P350 I tested, I managed to get a hold of a P550 today and it is not a very pretty sight. The satellite signal that reaches the GPS chipset is extremely low (max of 29dB-Hz instead of the usual 40dB-Hz a "coated windshield" impact really), to the point where it's going to be difficult to do a cold start (4 hours without using a GPS) that requires downloading new Ephemeris data with a signal level of 28dB-Hz. Add in a coated windhshield and you probably won't be able to hold the fix.

Even the Qtek G100/iMate PDA-N that had a weak antenna performed significantly better. I'm at a loss as to why that is compared to the P350, possibly because they crammed in a BT and WiFi and module and cut down on the antenna or placed it differently.
On the road, the sceen is very bright
From all angles, the audio jack is a 2.5mm
This is unexpected, but the P350 looks like a clone of the Orange SPV M5000/i-Mate JasJar!
The Mio P350 was announced just before CeBIT 2006, at the same time as the P550 (P350 with Bluetooth and WiFI) and the new family of AIOs C210/510/710/H610. This is Mio's first GPS PDA with an internal antenna and I was curious to see whether it would offer better GPS performance than the Qtek G100 or Loox N520. My initial reservations about that format vanished with the Mio A701 and Eten G500 GPS PDAPhones that offered excellent performance, see details.
Original message : Has anyone got one yet? Would love to know how if it performs similar to the A701. Any chance of a review gpspassion if not already done so? :) |

Posted - 15 avr. 2010 : 20:48:57 hi everyone. Just telling that crashoverhead finished the 6.5 rom for airis T620, clone of our P550. It work great on my P550, add better wifi connection, able to read sdhc, and give a fabulous modern look to our P550. This rom is a french one. |

Posted - 10 févr. 2010 : 04:30:34 While I'm not really sure where, when or how often THIS issue has been addressed, as I haven't been able to find anything like it, yet - only similar...
I have a pair of 550s, one which has a screen-ribbon issue, and the other works fine... Well. DID, anyway.
I loaned it to my younger brother, last week, and when I got it back, it wouldn't boot. It's basically locked up, but NOT at the 'Mio' screen like most people's that I've read about.
It boots past the initial 'Mio' splash, to the 'Windows Mobile' screen..... And just sits there. I let it sit for about 6hrs, today, seeing if it were just slower than all hell.
NSL. When I came back, it was STILL at that screen.
After an hour on the phone to California (all the way across the country, from me) interrogating my brother, it finally came out that he'd done some update that one of his "computer buddies" told him about...
Bastard flashed my 550 with a 320(?) Actually, from what he'd said, he'd copied over some crap into the %root%\Mio folder and it ran fine.... Then he did a hard-boot so that his computer would recognize it (a fool-proof way to get the compy to read it: plug it in and hit the reset button, on the bottom), and it hung.
This is (er... Was?) my handheld for my company and now it's useless (can we say "paperweight" boys and girls? How 'bout "skipping-stone?" I knew you could).
Can SOMEBODY help me out, with this? I don't care if I need to sterilize the thing and reinstall the OS/ Firmware/ ROM...
Help? Hints? Advice?
All the above would be fine, just please drop in some links for file sourcing.
Thanks, a ton, in advance.
Ant

Posted - 12 déc. 2009 : 18:34:32 I had a look inside the WM6.5 OS in the P550. There are a few things left that suggested the OS came from a HTC smartphone. Normally HTC uses Qualcomm cpu that includes gps, wifi, 3g on the same chip. As WM6.5 is quite recent, I guess the Rom will handle all right ephemeris data for Qualcomm cpu that must be A-GPS compatible. [ed - see PM]

OK. I'll have a look with one of the tools. You are right when you said it's not an official firmware. As a matter of fact, after the flash my P550 presented the Telephone function at bottom left of the screen! That makes me think the firmware came from a smartphone (HTC?). If it is the case then it might have the function to update the ephemeris data still left in there. Will let you know. |

Posted - 11 déc. 2009 : 19:59:59 You would need to use the tool discussed in the topic I linked, but I see no reason to think it's been activated as this does not seem to be an official firmware and the P550 not being a smartphone updating the ephemeris data would be rather cumbersome. |

Posted - 11 déc. 2009 : 19:53:31 I'm not sure either if the SIF (SiRFInstantFix) capability is included in there. But perhaps you can tell me how to check it from my device and I'll let you know? |

Posted - 11 déc. 2009 : 16:20:01 Sure, I have half a mind to upgrade my P550 to WM6.5 myself based on your positive feedback. I don't see any indication on XDA that they new ROM activates SIF though? |

Posted - 11 déc. 2009 : 09:46:19 Thanks gpspassion for the signature and the AGPS clarification. I know now what I'm going to do this weekend! Hope my lady doesn't shout too much and the kids stop to harass me by asking to go out to Mc Do! |

Posted - 11 déc. 2009 : 02:17:42 Well it is one form of AGPS, we'd called it "internet AGPS", read all about in Internet AGPS - InstantFix / MTK v2 / gpsOneXTRA with discussion of some nifty tools too. |

Posted - 11 déc. 2009 : 02:08:58 Definition of assisted gps
"Assisted GPS, generally abbreviated as A-GPS, is a carrier network dependent system which can, under certain conditions, improve the startup performance of a GPS satellite-based positioning system. It is used extensively with GPS-capable cellular phones as its development was accelerated by the U.S. FCC's 911 mandate making the location of a cell phone available to emergency call dispatchers.[1]"
Nothing to do with downloading the quickgps file. Assisted gps uses cellular triangulation to assist in locking into a position faster and have more accuracy.
I really don't think quick gps has anything to do with assisted gps either. It's just satelite reference information for your gps reciever so it can locate satelites and lock in faster.

Posted - 10 déc. 2009 : 21:21:16 In my smartphone HTC Touch Cruise, I use WiFi at home to run QuickGPS and it works fine. There's no reason why it does not as it goes to an URL, downloads a small file (packedephemeris.ee) and put it on the Windows directory.
In My P550, I also have Wifi and I manually go to the same URL, download the same file and put it in Windows folder. But I hate to do it manually every 7 days and I am trying to find the equivalent application to QuickGPS in HTC.
In my humble opinion and please correct me if I'm wrong, the ephemeris file works only if the GPS chip is of type A-GPS (Assisted GPS). My fear is that the SirfIII chip in our MIO P550 is a little bit too "old" and is not equipped therefore with this GPS Assisted capability.
Can someone confirm?

Zunkus,
True, today the only version of WM6.5 for P550 in my knowledge is beta and in French. The English version as I understood will be available before the year ends. I might however be wrong as the gentleman who writes the Rom, CrashOverHead, must be very busy with multiple projects to run in the same time.
Besides that, I spent less than 5 minutes to pass from the CE4.0 to WM6.5. Pretty straight forward as you can see in : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=277374&page=20 (See post from Moonscapex).
You can not compare the two: world of difference! Very stable WM65, connects flawlessly to PC via ActiveSync, screen on/off as you set, consistent password screen, battery optimization...I have used WM6.5 for few weeks now and I never regret for that decision. Despite it's still in beta. |

Posted - 10 déc. 2009 : 15:15:10 Assisted GPS uses cellular. The Mio p550 is not cellular. Just live with the Aquisition time, sirf III is still way faster than my tomtom gps unit. |

Posted - 10 déc. 2009 : 10:27:14 Hello,
I'm using WM6.5 on my MIO P550 with a stability never met before. But it is not the purpose of this note.
As there is a function called QuickGPS to assist in quickly fixing the satellites but it works only with AGPS (or A-GPS) for Assisted GPS, can someone confirm that MIO P550 SirfIII chip is not AGPS compatible?
In this way I will not have to stay late at night trying to get it work at any cost while the wife shouts upstairs!
Many thanks! |

Posted - 25 sept. 2009 : 07:00:06 Hi Milan2007, Personally I never had a problem with Windows Media Player (WMP) so I won't be any help on this ... I use regullary GSPlayer as MP3 player and find it better than WMP you can find it on http://www.pocketpcfreeware.com/en/index.php?soft=701 After for customisation all depend how you use your PDA for. I used it mainly at work for GPS and contacts syncronisation ... so didn't customize it a lot added somes games to kill time and somes scientific calculator ... You'll find lots of utilities on pocketpcfreeware ... The only problem I had with my P550 is a bad rom ... so after 2 return for reparation I flashed myself the rom until one day I didn't had enough space to install the new rom ... send it a third time for reparation and then they changed me the all motherboard with the rom ... since then 2-3 year ago I never had a single problem with my P550 |
