I finally completed the GPS Map Database. 
Here it is: World Map Database (no direct linking please, link to this thread instead)
It has every country listed and links to maps that are suitable for GPS Navigation and calibration. It's split into 2 sections. The first section has a list of commercial products that can either do GPS navigation or at least route planning. The second section are free maps all over the web that can be downloaded and calibrated. I have not included any maps that are too vague (like CIA fact book maps etc...) so all maps are suitable for navigation.
I wasn't able to find maps for every single country out there, so some are still blank. But so far there are over 2000 maps, covering the majority of the world.
Feel free to post new links that I have not found and will add them to the database.
I am still planning to put together a write up with some tips on calibration, general databases that are available out there with lat/long locations and some other useful stuff.

May be you can add this to the website with an interface, so that it can be interactive?

where do i download the maps from? i cant see any map packs with this link?
assuming i down have any internet on the move i want to be able to download all the maps before i go - load them onto a pda device and use the pda as a GPS navigation unit.
i will be travelling through remote places such as mongolia and kazakstan where there a few good maps on google! so i will have to download specialist maps, however i am unsure where to start !
advice would be greatly apperciated. |

You have to download the maps you will need for your journey before you go, (unless you have mobile internet!), and there is no routing - just simple position mapping. The Google database looks the best.
Satellite map downloads look like they are limited to about 100 per day if you need them. The next day you can start again.
You can run the appication as many times as you like so with for example GPSGate from www.franson.com you can show mapping at different zoom levels in different windows. Could be useful.

I am trying to plan a road trip from London to Mongolia! alot of these links are dead.
Does anyone know if there is a more upto date list with active links or a full map pack with the maps already included?

check basarsoft too. they made a turkish map with the best available coverage.. major data provider of turkey (provided the data for navturk previously and now partnered with igo and garmin).. |
