I've found a lot of good info on this site so far, but much of it is geared toward the 720 and 730 and is spread all over the place. Hopefully this thread will become a one stop shop for the 740. I'm posting excerpts of what i have confirmed works on the 740, as well as links to other good info that may be useful.

So first off, unlocking the unit, courtesy of ideefixe:

quote:
Before you attempt to unlock or customize, you should make a backup copy of your SD card. Better yet, copy the content to another 1GB or 2GB SD card and use the copy instead.

Unlocking

On the root of the SD card, there is a file call addons.txt
Edit it and add an extra line to bring up WinCE desktop and explorer:

quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[modules]
V7 Navigation = "icons/V7.bmp", "\\Storage Card\\iGO\\iGOpna.exe"
Explorer = "icons/files.bmp", "\\Windows\\explorer.exe"

[Autostart]
Navigation = "\\Storage Card\\iGO\\iGOpna.exe"

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now insert the SD card into the GPS, you should notice an extra Explorer icon appearing on the menu. Touch it the first time to bring up the WinCE desktop. Touch the icon again to bring up the file explorer. It's that easy.

There is no need to replace the menu shell. You can add additional icons by adding additional lines to the addons.txt file. The file \\My Flash Disk\Launcher\data.zip contains the bitmaps that you can use for the menu buttons. These are the defaults available:

quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

align.bmp
arvale.bmp
calculator.bmp
classics.bmp
contacts.bmp
files.bmp
flux.bmp
freehand.bmp
games.bmp
ico_align.bmp
ico_calen.bmp
ico_lang.bmp
media.bmp
multimedia.bmp
music.bmp
picture_viewer.bmp
settings.bmp
solitaire.bmp
time.bmp
V7.bmp

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lots of other good info in that thread as well, definitely worth a read - http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=102174

Next up is adding solitare, courtesy of ctheodores

quote:
Add Windows Solitare
This is an easy hack and will work with the iGo shell and the Windows shell. Since the 720 or 30 does not come with all of the Windows CE files, we have to get them from somewhere. Microsoft freely distributes a platform builder for Windows CE .net 5, the core software for the 720/730. Using this builder, I got the files needed to add features to the 720. To get Windows Solitare, download here:addsol.zip
Extract the contents, plug in your 720/30 to the PC, and copy the two files to your 720 or 30's TFAT drive. Unplug, and using explorer on your 720, copy the two files into your "Windows" folder. You can put them anywhere, as long as they are together.

To use in Windows, hold your finger or a small blunt object down on the file "solitare.exe" and a circle will draw up. Then a menu will appear. In the menu, click on "Copy". Then double tap into "Programs" (this should be //windows/programs). Hold down again on a blank area like you did before to get the circle menu. In the menu, click on "Paste Shortcut". You can usually rename the shortcut to what you want. In Windows when you click on Start and Programs, you will now see Solitare and Windows Explorer.

To use in the iGo shell, add this line to your IGOPATH.TXT file under the [GAMES] section (see first post on how to do that).

Windows Solitaire = "icons/solitaire.bmp", "\\windows\\solitare.exe"

Actual link is here: http://ourcountryroads.com/public/downloads/addsol.zip
Works surprisingly well.

Last is Stan Matofu's AMAZING skin, which fixed just about all the gripes I had with this thing, including displaying current time, speed, and street, as well as adding quick buttons to the history and suspend. Lots of good details, including some code examples and programming specifics in the thread: http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=103774&whichpage=5

Link to the download - latest version AFAIK: http://rapidshare.com/files/108308303/data.zip.html (4/17/08 version)

Just replace the data.zip file, after backing up the original of course.

Still to do:
Make a registry backup to easily restore changes after a reset.

Also need to find a fix to get the start bar to appear again. Edencrest has a solution for the 730 but I can't find taskbar.exe or ITaskMgr.exe so I haven't tried it yet, but here's what he did:

quote:
I've found the way to get to the "taskbar" after the 1st load. The 1st time you load "explorer" it takes you to the CE Taskbar/desktop. Subsequent requests just take you to "Explorer". This entry allows you to access the "Taskbar" from the main menu. You will need to load some of the previous upgrades mentioned in this feed.

[modules]
V7 Navigation = "icons/V7.bmp", "\\Storage Card\\iGO\\iGOpna.exe"
Explorer = "icons/files.bmp", "\\Windows\\Explorer.exe"
Task Manager = "icons/files.bmp", "\\Storage Card\\Unlock\\Windows\\Taskbar.exe"

[Autostart]
Navigation = "\\Storage Card\\iGO\\iGOpna.exe"
Task = "\\Storage Card\\Programs\\Utils\ITaskMgr.exe

Lastly, there's a great 730 hack out there by mrsirpantsalot that I haven't yet tried on the 740 - anyone want to try that one out?

Wish I had more time to play around with this, but I've already wasted an entire weekend of studying thanks to this little thing!

We just had a nav740 donated to our boy scout troop for geocaching. Will this model work for geocaching?
Can we add garman map source topo maps to it?
Thanks!

Hey,
I've just purchased nav740 under winCE 6.0 (5" Igo8; Chinese manufacture; e-bay $100). I am presently trying to unlock it and follow instructions on page1. Surprisingly there is no addons.txt on SD card. Do I need to create it? Does winCE 6.0 use it?
Appreciate your help.

Yeah, they had a "great" business plan all along anyways.
Heck http://www.v7support.com/ been under construction for month now.
Anyways.., thank g-d for iGo8, a MUCH better software then what this came with.

For people interested in installing MioPocket (ver50) on NAV740 here is how I managed to make it work:
1. Use the explorer hack from the first page.
2. Copy MioPocket to the root of the SD card
3. Power the NAV740 on with the SD card inserted
4. Start Explorer and then navigate to the root of the SD card.
5. Double click the on MioAutoRun.exe and wait for the process to complete.

The unit will reboot first showing the original menu and then MioPocket will pop over it, after this you can kill the igolaunch.exe.

There are a lot of items to be tweaked for this unit to fully work with MP but there are only minor issues or there are workarounds at this time; here are some of them:
A. there is no autorun file that can be placed on the SD card - this will eliminate step 4 and 5 above (need more digging to find the right filename; other options might work too like renaming files in MyFlashDisk although I wold not recommend this until we can find a way to reflash the unit, there is a 720 firmware available but not a 740 yet)
B. PC Connected still pops up when connecting to a PC ( there is a fix to this problem but I did not have time to test).
C. there is no click sound when taping on the screen - can be fixed in Control Panel (Sound)
D. the question.wav file sounds like a camera shutter rather then what I was used on my R300 Asus unit.
E. the igolaunch.exe needs to be killed after instalation or a hard reset.

There might be more issues but this how far I got.

Cheers.

EDIT 1

Item E fixed by adding these lines to initialize.mscr:

#NAV740-only. Kill the V7 menu
If(ProcExists("igolaunch.exe"))
	Kill("igolaunch.exe")
EndIf

Item B temp fixed by editing HKEY_CURRENT_USER\FORTUNA\USB ConnectPcFg from 0 to 1 (thanks erickmsr), items TBD: add to miopocket installation script and find a way to avoid the soft reset after the USB cable is unplugged and more important to avoid the reset of the register value to 0 after the cable unplug.

EDIT 2

The number of steps for MiPocket installation can be reduced if you edit the addons.txt by adding

MioPocket = "icons/files.bmp", "\\Storage Card\\MioAutoRun.exe"

to the [modules] section, this also help with hard resets.

I have the 740 stuff on the 730 USA ...do I just copy the Western European maps to the maps folder or is there more to do?
bubbah Posted - 21 juil. 2009 : 21:39:27
OK ...I have received the SD card with the Western European map upgrade set...I could use a little help figuring out how to put it to use ...my USA card that came with the thing has this on it: I have a 2gb card for the US stuff with everything on it but only around 1/3 of the states on it as the 740 upgrade ...there are no POIs in the POI folder except one file named speedcamupdates.spud in a folder called POI/speedcam ...should there be more? ...that folder is NOT on my GPS now ...do I need it? Where are the POIs? ...are they in each .fbl file? So, when I want to use the WE maps, how do I make it work? Do I need to copy some stuff from the WE SD card on to the regular one winding up with one card for all? Can I put everything on 1 card (I have 2gb...I also have 4gb ...will that work?)?? ...thanks!!

Hello,

I've followed all of the instructions to get smatofu's skin working on my 740 unit, but it doesn't work. I have access to WinCE Explorer, but when I tap the "V7 Navigation" icon on the Launcher screen, an hourglass pops up in the middle of the screen and will not go away. I've left the unit for over 30 minutes, and still nothing happens. I don't know what's happening and would love to get the skin installed and working.

Thanks!
bubbah Posted - 24 juin 2009 : 21:08:59
there are instructions on their site to load the maps... it's a .pdf file right there for you ...

I just got my Nav740 and I am quite surprised at the performance for the price I paid ($95 shipped). I'm even more surprised after finding this forum and discovering what I can do with it. As I read through I came across a post about loading the new iGo maps. I'm not looking for any links but i was wondering if anyone had any instructions on how to load these maps and getting them to work successfully on the nav740.
